Guys,
One of the Vanagon members died last year. His kids have his 1987 auto Vanagon with working AC located on the island of Oahu. Not sure which community. It was running last March but currently won't start. Looks like it lacks fuel delivery (needs a pump) probably.
Both of his adult children live on Maui and the big island so they are at their Dad's old house and right now trying to deal with this van but will be leaving to return home in a couple days.
The price is very flexible

There is at least one company that rents these out there (not sure which island). Seems like a well-sorted rig that needs a little TLC would a worthy addition to the fleet. _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

His daughter Terry mentioned that bus and said she might reach out to you. She has your email address.

It'd be great to see someone here buy Tom's van and share tales, and future travels.
His loss is still felt. Great guy.
Continued commiserations to his daughters.
Aeromech, class move.

I worked on the PSA/USAir Bae 146s here in San Diego. Has your wife seen the PSA display at the San Diego Aerospace museum? _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

No, it'd make her
That may be a good surprise I'll spring on her someday! 👍🏼 We were both shocked when they flew Princess Diana in on one...
Great times. Flew on Convair 580s before the 146s, and we're both still deaf from the former. _________________ 84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

I just received word that the vanagon is going to a samba member as a gift. This looks to be a great solution for Toms kids. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

That's great news. Now someone with the ability, desire and money will pour same into this girl and likely she'll be out on the highways and byways again, rather than moldering somewhere or cut up for parts. Well done and best to his family and friends. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

Hey guys!
So Gary (Aeromech) put Tom`s daughter Terri and I in touch.
She was about to contact me anyway since she got looped in via email when I first got the Hulk Van back in 2016 when I met Tom. It was a rusty van that had caught on fire and was headed to the scrapyard. I stripped it bare bones.
We hung out with Tom at the Polo tailgating events on the North Shore with the vans.
I went and picked up the current van Tuesday 4Th.
It wasn`t starting, no spark.
I helped her and her brother doing some minor concrete repairs while waiting for the tow truck, as it`s an automatic, I couldn`t tow it without removing the axles. We talked stories, looked at some pics. It was very nice to meet them both, super kind people. Tom must a be a proud dad.
I ended up with a bunch of parts, a few odd things like rusty burnt parts from the Hulk van I never noticed were missing
I replaced the ECU and it fired right up.
It didn't run as good as it should, so I replaced the fuel filter and air filter . Fuel filter was nasty.
It runs well now, waiting on spark plugs and distributor cap/rotor to show up in the mail.
It has a bad J pipe and muffler but not crazy loud so for now it will do.
Rear brakes shoes are gone, waiting on these in the mail too, there's a bad groaning noise in the steering but I think it's bc the pressure flex hose got replaced without re-installing the restrictor. I'll get another set done to see if that solves it.
It shifts nice, leaks some engine and transmission oil a little. Runs on the hot side to my liking, I almost overheated the other day in traffic even with the fan functioning properly. I had bled the coolant circuit as a piece of mind before first driving it. Imma install an external trans cooler anyway, waiting on some fittings in the mail. A tiny coolant seep spot under the AC compressor, nothing crazy yet. Gotta recharge the R134a refrigerant gas, it turns on but is not cold.
It drives tight, I think some wheel bearings are starting to make noise though. I will see.
It's a good beater van ( choke rust), I needed one for surfing and daily driving, that's perfect
The rubber chicken will remain on the dashboard bc it is a tribute to Tom who gave one to each of his kids for their car.
Aloha!
Luna adopted the van right away, I opened the sliding door to inventory the stuff, she jumped in and sat there. Cute. I know Tom liked her
