I put two frozen 1 gallon jugs in the icebox. Went camping last weekend and it was nice weather ( not hot ) - like high 70's nights in 50's. Two day camping trip: the icebox worked well to keep beer, eggs and cheese. My main issue with it is getting in and out of the bus.
Its actually nice to have the flat surface to put drinks, phone, etc when you are in bed. |

Something like this is a good trade off for space and functionality:
Or this:
Looks like it would be pretty easy to build and uses the same attachment points as the ice box. I actually reached out to RJ Power about doing one and he said no problem although his would be solid wood (not laminate) and he doesn't have the table laminate for the top. Both laminates are available from nlavw.com so someone could do these. Would definitely want to see some sort of drop down table and like the drink holders on top.
Who wants to step up and make a few? I'm down for one. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

I removed the icebox and sink and am in the middle of building a smaller storage cabinet. Two drawers and a cabinet large enough for a Coleman lantern and fuel. This comes about 10 inches from the bulkhead. Frees up a lot of space and makes for more practical storage.

I've always wondered how they would do. Does yours have the "dam" at the bottom to hold the overflow water in? I would be afraid to load a block of ice into my ice tray. I feel like it might just snap
The original seal on mine is so brittle and fragile that i'm pretty sure it wouldn't do much anyway. I use it to store various dry goods. _________________ Brandon |

Outlet of the drip tray down pipe has a 1/4 turn valve... right?
Water is hard to heat up (high heat capacity).
It seems like the drip tray w/outlet valve helps to maintain cold.
I understand the obvious deficiencies of vertical hinges vs. horizontal hinges.
Cold doesn’t drop out of an ice chest when opened.
Well... I should say, heat doesn’t enter as well in a horizontal hinge cooler. _________________ aka: Evan

I freeze half gallon milk jugs or use yeti ice. Neither last long and I insulated the hell out of the icebox. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Real block ice lasts 2-3 days + if you don't open the door constantly and sit there looking at stuff. Freeze your own in 2 qt paper milk/juice cartons and peel off the paper, or use a small storage tote for a mould. Hardcore space fanatics could make a custom cardboard box mould and put a plastic bag inside to fully fill the footprint and height of the rack over the pan.
Freeze every other thing you can ahead of time too, like bottled water, juice, etc.., it doesn't take long to thaw one out if you need it, after a few days it'll be close to liquid anyways, but it was part of a team effort on the way there.
A few milk jugs of frozen water in there a day or two ahead for a pre cool also helps.
Mass consumption things like beer are better off in their own dedicated cooler for easy access beside the campfire and to save getting in/out of the bus and icebox constantly.
If the bus is parked on a slope make sure the tray can drain and consider where the drainings will go, a soggy river right in front of the cargo door makes a muddy bus inside, and parking on an extreme uphill will flood the cargo floor back to under the bed, that's fun to step in at 03:00 |
Best advice for the stock application. I thought my grandfather was being channeled though you BD _________________

Pick up a lb of dry ice....keep that on your regular block of ice...you’ll be quite surprised. Wrap the dry ice in a paper bag. _________________ Looking for SP Kadron manifolds...please !!

I'm liking this design.
Can you enter and exit the bus through the front cargo door with this cabinet?
That would be my criteria. I hate how the stock fridge totally blocks that door.
Edit: Just realized this was in a bay window bus, but I think this design might work for unblocking the front door in a splitty camper.

Thanks, the Lino tiles on the floor are 9" square for refetence so about 12" deep for the cabinet counter top from the bulkhead. I'll have it finished and installed this weekend. Here is the cabinet after I skinned it with the original paneling and repro hardware.

Thanks man.
Got it finished and installed. I could have gone with hidden hinges but that was another opportunity to turn back the clock.
