Found this pic of my Ghia circa 2001 before I drove it cross country from So Cal to Virginia. Can't wait until I get it back to driving condition!

here's my 69 as I found it. A true barn find. Sat here for 34 years when I first took the photos. I just started on its restoration about 2 weeks ago.

Welcome. It doesn't look like a lot of restoration is needed. It appears to be a nice survivor. Congratulations, start a build thread so we can follow along in you progress.

Thank you for the welcome.

Forgive the blindness of this poster...but where does one start a build thread here?
I have a few photos of progress thus far. Its pretty decent...time in the unconditioned garage has taken its toll on the fuel/brakes/interior however. Nothing I can't handle.

Edit: I started a build thread. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9082917#9082917

Welcome from me too.. Starting a build thread is the equivalent of opening a new topic. There’s a button for that on the top right corner of the forum list, right next to the search box.

Adding photos is slightly different whereby you add them to the Gallery under the corresponding album (in this case “Ghia Coupe’”). Look on the menu bar for “Gallery” Click that and a dialogue opens, choose “New Photo”
There’s a bunch of details about that in the stickies topic “How to post pictures in the Forum”. If you are unsure about anything, just ask and we’ll happily help you.

Well, it certainly looks like you've been dublin down on your efforts! Smile

... but wait - I see by the dates on the photos in your gallery that you've actually been working on this for at least 5 years now.
That sounds about right. Very Happy

The color looks intriguing - the way it appears different in each photo, I can't tell if it's charcoal gray, or more of a steel blue.

It doesn't appear to be the original color for your Ghia, but is it an "original" VW color from some other year/model?

I definitely like it very much - Looking Good!

My latest buy. About a month and half ago I purchased my first Karmann Ghia. 74 auto stick coupe. I'm the 3rd owner. It's numbers matching with only 36,000 original miles. It hasn't been run or driven since 2007-08, so I've been slowly going through it to get it back on the road. I got it running, but I can't get it to go into gear, so I think there's a vacuum leak in the tank under the car. It's had one repaint in the original Phoenix Red and the interior is practically mint outside of a crack on the dash top.

Hi Albert, good to see you've finally joined the Ghia brigade. The autostick experts will be along shortly to get your Ghia moving. The car looks in pretty good shape...how's the nose under the Alfa grille. Wink

Perfect. The car doesn't appear to have ever had any accident damage other than dome door dings and an il-fitting bumper from a tow. A portion of the spare tire well was patched prior to the paint job which led to that mess of overspray in the trunk which I have since fixed with steelwool and paint thinner.

Under the grille though, there's no damage. There's undercoating or something that was used to seal the black rubber mat to the nose, so I'm waiting for a hot day to scrape all that off. It's still the original paint under that as well.

There's a a few rust bubbles in the rear quarter panels, but everything else is solid and there's no bondo in the car at all, so I'm just going to leave it all as is for now and drive it and enjoy it.

The "Alfa Grille" comment is the usual joke about that particular Ghia accessory as they were usually fitted to conceal the all too common nose dent. Not a lot of love for the grille among Ghia owners...they fall into two camps, the "I don't really like its" and the "I really hate its" Wink

Agree with the leave it as it is and enjoy it. Smile

I think the grille was installed by the dealer. I have a friend who has a
68 or 69 coupe that came from the same selling dealer and his also has the Alfa grille.

I lucked out and happened to have a metal plate frame from that dealer in my collection for the car. So that’s a win.
