They look almost the exact same but your pics were missing from the first page when I checked(showed up as broken links before but now they're back). I was just trying to post closure for anybody else reading the thread in the same situation I was. |
That's odd you'd have gotten broken links on my images, the server I have keep my FTP photos on, has like, 99.9% uptime. Anyway, I just reposted that photo to make it easier for anyone to do direct comparison if they so wanted to, part of the closure and summing up stuff! |

There are two ways to determine the fiber content of material used in automobiles. Pull some fibers from a swatch or cut a small piece from the back side and burn it. If it forms a soft ash and smells much like paper it is primarily cotton. Many of the napped headliners were cotton. Why cotton? Because it could be steamed to remove wrinkles. Provided it wasn't vacuumed frequently the nap would still be there after many years.
If when it is burned it smells like burning hair then it contains or is composed of wool or animal hair. I really doubt that headliners in VW cars contained mohair. Mohair has always been very expensive. Do you think VW would really use mohair in an inexpensive car?
Regarding the perforated headliners; my 1972 European Super Beetle contains perforated headliner in only three panels. All the rest of it is printed; there are no actual holes in the material. My car also has cloth upholstery and short back seats. The cloth upholstery in my car resembles corduroy but it is synthetic; probably polyester. American 1972 models all have high back seats and vinyl upholstery.

Vacuming the cloth sucks the fuzz right off the headliner material, given the age.
The cloth sample books are amazing to see! _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?

… your original headliner looks to be in great shape, including the very nice water stained patina... that's how things look after 60+ years - man, i'd say that original is rare, rare, rare and a blessing. I know, we are all different and some like everything to be new and pretty - i'd say, most original is way nicer than repop....
- eek, the PO put a faux oriental carpet up there, on my '55 - he liked that. See what I mean, when I say, we are all different?
… put a nice mouse fir headliner in my '55 - bought on thesamba classifieds - was originally purchased from Sewfine.
Ha, ha, you know how some people are, they refer to our seat material as leather. I once looked at a '59 bug that had an aftermarket real wool headliner and it made me itch, just looking at it.
… here's my '55 with "mouse fir"
