Hi,

I'm going to look at a bus tomorrow.

Its a 10th December 1965 SO42 Its county destination was France, if that means anything.

I've seen the birth certificate. the vehicle ident is: 236 060 352

I've found 23=Kombi 6=1966? and i'm spent... i cant find what the other two codes mean? Any help would be great.

I'm i correct in thinking the M-Code plate is behind the front seats and the vin on the air box and also a chassis plate next to the engine?

Thanks

Pete

That is the vin number, it is not an option code. The first three number signify the model and year.

The mcode plate should be attached to the front of the bulkhead.

I didn't think December 1965 was that early for an SO-42.

Here are some earlier ones, three are German delivery:

It has to be pretty damn early with this Fabrik-Nr. tag:

Are any of those December Buses Pop Tops? I could have sworn I read somewhere the pop top wasn't introduced till January of '65.

I have the 14th SO42 off the line according to the above tag and it was made mid Jan 65'. I dunno much about buses that were never officially exported in to US market but in all my years of digging I have never come across the first 13 SO42's..

when I was a kid - 1965, my dad bought a new VW CAMPER in 1/65, witha' ladder up the back to a red and white tent platform, on the roof and a large side tent - WE ALWAYS REFERRED TO IT AS A Westy - now, when I look at pictures, I realize it might notta' been a Westy… but Jack was Jack.

Jan 65 was some months before December 65.
I'm not seeing Dec 65 as being crazy early. For some reason I'm also thinking SO-42s started January 1965.
Maybe you read the OP's post as the bus being buildt December 1964? But it was buildt Dec 65, is a '66 model year bus.

Did Westy tag year stamps follow the VW bus model year or calendar year?

Not a westy, but a VWoA camper. Do you have any parts left over from that by chance?
