Yeah, I saw that you two Daves did that and considered it. While easier to see if it blows, it's also seen every time the engine lid is off and my anal eyes couldn't tolerate that. Anxious

Yesterday I added insulation to the power steering contacts.

I would suggest that everyone install a 7.5 amp inline fuse for the fuel injection / fuel pump circuit.

It is cheap insurance warding off potentially big problems.
Keep in mind that If the fuse does blow, your engine shuts off.

But for me, better that than a fire!

On my “to-do” list today!

Here’s the quality install I’m aiming for;

- nice heat shrink on connectors...

- nothing more or less than needed...

Git 'r done! Cool

And mark up your Bentley wiring diagram for when your van dies and you forgot you installed a fuse.

Seems like an excellent idea (thinking of future owner -me- lying in a puddle in the side of the road changing out a fuel pump - to no avail)

My question is this the proper spot in the Bentley - 97.124? Pretty sure it is, but would like to post the correct spot shown in farfromslow’s post above. ‘91 2.1l auto (Canadian)

No, that spot would only protect the fuel pump wiring.
The spot to protect everything is on a previous diagram page, where the current track 5 box next to your arrow leads to.

Look for a circle with P1 and a connector labeled T2m.
The fuse goes in the red wire between those points.

I installed a fuse but because having a fuse is NOT expected by anyone, I clearly marked the box with a label clearly stating that there is a fuel injection fuse.

That's a really good idea. I had a friend wash his engine bay and then his van wouldn't start. Took a long time to remember that fuse was installed and of course it was the reason it wouldn't start. It did it's job!

I think having a fuse is not a bad idea. But doing this makes a more secure connection that is not hampered by a lack of room. When using this with proper connectors you no longer have to worry about those stupid flag connectors.
You can use the factory flags or just lob them off and use a good quality open barrel connector with a clip on cover.

Could this be a concern for any converted vans, be it Subaru, Bostig, Tiico, ALH, etc?

Just a WBX issue as I know it.

The OE 1993 - 1995 wiring diagrams for the engine I used in my VW inline engine conversion do not show a PS switch as an input to ECU. AFAIK the engine management simply sees any change in idle (via cam position sensor?) then compensates for that.

I'd guess that most OBD1/2 engine management systems, thus conversions, behave in a similar manner. So that, and removal of the WBX wiring harness, remove that potential issue.

There are other OE wires in the Vanagon that are not fused. And, depending on how a conversion was done or what the OE wiring diagrams show, more unfused 15 or 30 buss wires could end up being installed. In regards to those wires becoming a potential issue, it all comes down to the quality of conversion work that is done.

Neil.

There's been some more people with new to them Vanagons since the last time this thread was looked at so just bumping it to bring the title up to be seen again.

Dave K has a clever solution which requires no wiring modifications... fused relays for the ECU and Fuel Pump!

i have added the set Dave gave me... makes disabling the fuel pump very quick!

Yes, that is a very good idea for this. "Glow" fuses are maybe the best innovation for fuses since the fuse.

According to pages 42 & 43 from http://www.mk2g60.yolasite.com/resources/Digifant/...rt%201.pdf

There are many things unfused from the the "fuel pump relay" output (terminal 87) that are unprotected from shorts. ICU, PS switch, all 4 injectors, fuel pump and O2 sensor heater.
