I asked a while back too but I don't think we can bring John out of ridge making retirement.

Does anyone know if the radius of the front nose is constant from the badge to the underside?

Sweet! I know two people who could help me make one of those. Thanks for the diagrams.

Maybe Mr. Kelly would make you a nose ridge if you asked nicely. I Bet he can bang those out in his sleep Razz .

Seems every once in a while somebody asks about them, probably a bunch more never say anything and make due with what they have because they hear they have no other option. Nobody needs one until they are no longer available it seems. I would guess there are a bunch of folks who if had the chance to buy one now if they became available again would grab their Visa's and place their order.

I'd buy one just to have if ever I needed it. Maybe Mr. Kelly should reconsider bringing them back.

Please refer to my earlier post where I point out how CHEAP Ghia people tend to be. Too many are still of the mindset that "it's a VW" and therefore "parts should be cheap" Rolling Eyes

I've wanted to make a ring roller for quite some time now. If I get that made, I think the tooling for nose ridges would be an easy next piece. I'd just have to schedule some time on the lathe to make them.

Does anyone know if there are technical VW drawings that describe the radius of the medicine ball part of the nose? I have run across blue prints before, but I can't remember if I have seen one for the KG.

I finally made some progress on this one... I've had too many other projects getting in the way!!! The preliminary tests look good. I can't wait to roll the car out so I can get to the nose!

I'm second in line; the front nose of my car has been damaged more than once there is enough bondo to repair two cars in that section only... It is very difficult to find a front nose section or the ridge section for a lowlight. I wouldn't mind pay for a excellent piece.

Nice job Greg! I like the spring die. I have made a few for low budget forming. They work great. You could make a nose section from scratch with that tool and some shrinking on the edges of a 2"-6" wide panel.

A great piece to help anyone learn more about contour swapping and metal shaping.

Now I just need to find someone local in KC who will let me make some templates off of a good nose. Mine is WAY to lumpy to get accurate curves!!!

I remember John's webpage describing the process. Any chance that writeup is still around? I have searched all over the ghiaspecialties website and can't find it.

I'd really like to see the size and/or profile of the bead roller mandrels.

archive.org is sometimes useful for finding old web content. the last date for the nose repair section on that site is aug 9, 2006:

Warning, old thread alert.

I thought it was worth posting some pictures of my Lowlight nose after a couple of hours with a hammer and dolly and Dannys nose tool.

Job was made a bit easier as I have the spare wheel well and rear support already removed for replacement, so it was possible to get to the under side more easily.

It ain't pretty, a bit like my own nose, but it will be all original steel.

Looks good, a little filler and it will look fine.

I have not seen this older post. Glad it popped back up. I have nose ridge issues too on my 72 Ghia. My ridge is mostly none existent. Mine has a little at the top but that is about it. It even has a crack in the middle that was revealed as I started removing the paint and Bondo. I need advice. I may even need to buy a new nose but just trying to explore my various options. I'm not really at this part of the project yet (not doing body work at the moment). I'm planning to tackle the chassis first then work on the body but since this popped up I need to think ahead at how I need to fix the nose. One thing to know about me is I have no metal working experience or even welding experience. But I am planning to do as much of my own work as possible to 1) save money and 2) I want to learn.

Any advice is welcomed.

Going to have to remove more paint and filler but that looks like it needs new metal.

A word of caution, replacing the nose is not for the faint of heart. Lots of things to cut loose and re-weld.
Here where I replace the one on my '73
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...p;start=40

It may be easier to just replace the center section where the bead is, not the entire nose.
