I recently bought another van. Didn't have too much time to work on it. But checked spark and spark is fine. 1/2 tank but fuel it seems too old.
Only one error that I tried to delete but it comes back. injector in cylinder 3 is short on ground.
I got some fresh gas but didn't put it in the tank yet. Wondering if I should first remove old fuel from tank.
Any ideas how to start it without removing old gas from tank? |

It could be bad gas; it could be no gas.
Check that you have fuel/injection events:
1) crank the engine for a bit; pull a spark-plug (on anything but cylinder #3) and see whether the plugs are wet with fuel. If you have fuel + spark, then perhaps the gas may indeed be bad. Drain and replace.
2) If the plugs are not wet, check for fuel pressure. If you don't have fuel pressure, check the fuse for the fuel pump; check for power to the fuel pump; replace the fuel pump.
3) If you have fuel pressure, but no fuel on the plugs, then the injectors are not firing. It could be related to the short-to-ground on the #3 injector...clear the codes and unplug the #3 injector, crank the engine over. If the injector is bad, you should get an open-circuit error code on the #3 injector while it is disconnected. If the short-to-ground error persists while disconnected, then either the wire-loom has a short or the driver for the #3 injector is bad. I don't know if either would prevent the other 5 injectors from firing, so I've suggested this last; but it's easy enough to check first, so don't be shy! _________________

Why not just make a custom set of wires with a Y splice in them. Then you could just run one distributor. |
I don't think electrickery works that way |

thanks a lot for reply!
I guess its easier to start with injector 3 unplugged and see if it starts or any other codes will appear.
To pull up sparks seems like whole bunch of work. |

I apologize for my assumptions; I thought you checked for spark already. Apparently, you checked to see that your coil-packs were firing. That doesn't actually mean that you have a spark in the chamber...your plugs could be fouled up, which would also cause the non-start issue that you are troubleshooting.
Good luck! _________________

You will spend way less time and money in a diagnostic approach than a symptom-part replace approach that many try here on the web.
These cars are well into the technical regime where you can't figure out bad parts by symptom. _________________ .ssS! |

@ ryaz
The van should run with one injector out. I just went through this on my 2000. If you have one bad one you might as well do them all because it involves a lot of work to get at them. |

Yeah, it runs just fine on 5 cylinders.
It seems there is no easy way to replace that one injector.
Any good source where to buy injectors? |

It's relatively labor intensive to R&R T4 2.8L VR injectors. Last set I did, I found a set via online resources- I don't recall who. Sorry. I opted to replace all 6 as they all appeared to be the same age and I didn't want to repeat the labour in a few months down the road. |

I bought these for my van: https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/444285/Fuel-Injector-IWP022/
Just couldn't see paying $140.00 per injector in a VW package. Of course there are other options, on ebay you can buy a complete set for the price of one of the ones that I bought. |
