I don’t like restrictive laws either and it can become ridiculous when it becomes a battle of wills. Most of the trouble comes from urban areas where folks don’t have a lot of green space so you get HOAs telling you if you can have lawn furniture and what color to paint the house, where to park the car. I saw one that said no trucks of any kind period even brand new. I refuse to live amongst people of this mindset which is why I’m located in the Midwest in a semi rural area. I can shoot a gun and have out my back door. I can park anything running or not in my yard. Here’s what I look at Every day and neighborhood doesn’t care they have projects of their own. I support SEMA and I support doing your own thing.

to me, your place is an improvement to property values! Nothing more property devaluing that restrictive laws. even worse is when they impose these laws after you have purchased the property. I didnt buy into the crap they tried to pull when they tried to add restrictions, that is wrong. If folks want restrictions, let them buy into it, dont force it upon current owners. It didnt end well for the ones that tried that in my city, but now they are at it again. every ten years or so they try another load of that crap. they are like mosquitos, you have to keep swatting them down.

If anyone wants to know the big picture, read at least this one post.
The home auto repair laws in Sacramento County been around for years. This is not new. All the hoopla came about cause one guy got a code violation a month ago with mulitple cars and junk all over is yard, then he posted on the grass roots motorsports forum and Jalopnik and others made a article about it that went viral on facebook. They gave everyone the impression this is some new law and its so crazy. They should have told the truth let everyone know this is a old law, and posted a picture of yard in question.
The purpose of those laws are to have a basis to clean up the worst offenders. Yet, there are cars on blocks in FRONT yards all over the place and they may never get a citation if nobody complains.
We have had some serious chop shops here. Were talking nasty chop shops with multilple stolen cars cut in half, welded back together, engines, front clips, stacks of random quarter panels all over the place, basically if you got a car with a salvage title and get a eery feeling something aint right.....it prabably came from one of our select sac county neighborhoods. Not talking big houses, people are doing this on small parcels where 3 bedroom houses reside not far apart.
We also have had issues with 4+ non working cars on FRONT lawns in residential areas where people are trying to have a nice neighborhood. The problem is, in order to clean up some of the crap, Sac needs a basic law to start the process.
True, the law should be better. But check your juristiction and you will be suprised to find out how many cities have the same basic laws.
I have friends with lifts in their garage, seperate garages with every tool imaginable doing full restorations and never been cited as they keep everything clean and out of sight.
Yeah, you wouldnt want to move to a neighboorhood where the houses are 2 feet apart and grind all night and expect to be ok, but choose a neighboorhood that fits your lifestyle and be respectfull.
I chose to be next to a busy street on pupose. Been there 20 years. Nobody wanted my house cause of the noise of traffic, however it fits perfectly with my automotive lifestyle. Nobody can hear the vws over the cars doin 70 flying by. I also have no evidence of project cars, everything tidy, not even a spot of oil in the driveway. Any neighbor that needs help I always help them for free. So that being said, if i have a few 6k moments in the garage under a water brake load, its not a big deal and blends in with the traffic flying by.
There are many "hotrod friendly" neighborhoods in sac county. People still do what they want. You dont have to worry about getting in trouble as long as your respectful. A clean hotrod enthusiest is not the target of these old laws that been on the books for years. |

Respectfulness dont get you anywhere when all it takes is one crappy nanny person to sick the code enforcement goons on you. Once reported, they say you must follow the letter of the law. that is the problem with these laws, they should never be on the books. To hell with the nannies, if they dont like the look of a classic car being restored, they can turn their head away and stare at their manicured, over fertilized, full of weed killer lawns, may they get cancer from all their lawn products.
If the issue is an illegal chop shop, send in the cops, trace the vin numbers, if stolen arrest the people. if a guy is grinding on metal at 2 am, waking the neighbors, then enforce the nighttime noise laws. The whole you cant do but minor work on you car crap, a 24 hour limit for repairs, or all car repair must be done in an enclosed garage are total bullshit laws. The writers of these laws should be tarred and feathered. _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Thanks man, this thread just needed some perspective and familiarity with the proximity...I had a feeling that was the case. I too live in a hot rod-friendly neighborhood, and keep a good rapport with neighbors.
Cheers! |

Them Florida hurricanes are something this native californian would never want. No place is really safe from mother nature.

Yeah its particular rough here in Northern Cali for a car guy. Only 22 inches per year of rain, can drive a VW 90% of the year with ease, lots of rust free cars, no inspections, no smog on 75 and older cars, its really bad.
All these bad conditions are really making me want to run to one of these high humidity places with cars rusted out and everyone is crying for heater boxes during the freezing ass winter driving in the snow.
Everywhere has its pluses and minus, but some of the comments here are abit overboard. |

I lived in Sacramento 33 years, Jpaull is spot on. The russian salvage cars and all the chop shops are crazy. Citrus Heights incorporated and really cleaned up a lot of problems, the property values went way up. If you are on the up and up, AND ARE PLEASANT WITH PEOPLE, you're generally ok.
on the flip side, now I live in Houston where there is no zoning at all. You can buy a house and an apartment complex can build around you. They will literally kill you if you try to fight it

I've seen his place, there's no reason in the world why his neighborhood should have a POA. It's a fairly upscale neighborhood and everyone already seems to take pride in their property.
However my neighborhood doesn't have a POA either and I used to hate the idea of one but now I would welcome it if it meant getting all the GD trailers off the street, junk out of people's front yards, and all the former dirt road dwellers that decided to move into a suburban neighborhood but continue their trailer trash ways OUT. Problem is my neighborhood is fairly lower middle income housing and as people have moved out landlords have come in and bought up the homes and made them rental properties, and mostly what used to be very nice, respectful, clean cut young couples or singles have been replaced with IDGAF types. I never in a million years thought I'd be saying this but I'd welcome a POA at this point. _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.
