So my 72 std. is missing the windshield defrost parts except for the upper vents inside..
I don't know what it should have and can't really find any good diagrams or pics.

Should it have a fresh air box or just ducting for the hoses coming up from the sides?

Any info would be appreciated!

This pic from the gallery is from a '72 Standard -

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here's his build thread - https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...;start=211

I don't believe the lower ducts are available new, check the classifies and see if you can find a vendor selling a bunch of them (like this guy, no affiliation) as you need all three (left, right, center, plus fresh air box)
I found a set for my '70 on eBay, so that's worth a glance as well.

WolfsburgWest carries all the paper hoses - http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/wolfsburg_new/Body_misc/misc_bug_body.cfm?type=1
And the top part of the vents that install from the inside are still available new if needed.

For the paper tube that attaches to the heaterchannel outlet (down the hole) I used electrical conduit of the same size. Fit perfect, though I did have to remove the hood to get them in.

Thanks.

So there would have to be vents in the hood for the fresh air box right?
There are no vents in my hood.

Did all the 72's come with the fresh air box?

Yep, fresh air box and associated vents were standard in '72.

Are you talking about the red bug you posted earlier? https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=712393
'cause that one has the fresh air vents..
