I was wondering how many early/ barndoor buses have more than 2 pop-out windows.
I saw this pic, which shows a bd with six pop outs:
It has the later pop-out windows I think, with spoon latches. The one behind the driver hinges at the rear, opens at the front like normal.
I took this pic of a 51 ambulance. I don't know how original the popouts are:
My June 53 bus has the early/ black knob latches, and four pop-outs.
The one behind the driver hinges at the front, like this:
Recently Everett posted this pic, which shows a bus with the pop-out behind the driver hinged at the front:
took a peek at some pics in the gallery
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_search.php?search_keywords=octo&search_forum%5B%5D=1
, and not seeing many bds with more than two pop-outs |

Hey Clara,
I have nothing to add to your thread. Sorry. BUT, is that your bus in the vintage pic??? How many BD with that color scheme, roof rack, air vent, etc. ?? |

Loads of standard microbuses with that colour scheme, and the air vent has been seen on numbers of 53 and earliers.
The roof rack, it's rare. I've think this is the 4th I've seen in pics. Mine is the only I've seen in person. It does look like my bus, doesn't it? No documentation on where the pic was taken.
The only thing is the vintage pic was actually reversed when posted, so unless it was reversed in the source, it was the cargo doors left (RHD?) twin of my bus.
Always thought the front hinged pop out behind the driver was unusual. |

Yes, I reversed it.
I remember it being a slide that was on eBay?
People post slides "backwards" on eBay all the time because they don't know slides are reverse images. _________________ How to Post Photos

6 pop-outs on a Barndoor is a pretty uncommon option from what I have seen.
My old '55 Kombi was a 6 pop-out Bus.
I remember there is a 1954 or 1955 23-Window that is an original 6 pop-out Bus.
I can't recall who owns that one.
I can't think of any others off the top of my head _________________ How to Post Photos

My '54 left the factory with 6 popouts (M114)
4 of the mounts have been welded over but they are as in the photo with the front pair opening forwards
If I ever find a decent set of popouts I'll fit them. There's not much airflow through a barndoor. |

no insight on the pop outs, but this brochure clip has obviously been edited with a rear bumper. bus already has pivot vent windows so is obviously a '53 that was edited for a 54 up brochure.

loving that shot and I am still wondering where this was taken. looks a lot like good old Kodachrome. to me it appears as if it was shot by somebody from or in the US. Quite opposite to that assumption, let me point out the traditional costume the person on the driver's seat is wearing. it has huge knobs carved from deer antlers, which is very traditional in southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland, northern Italy. possibly even reindeer in Scandinavia?
the Lady to the front is dressed very fashionably for the time. and if this pic is in the correct direction ( as after being reversed by Everett) it is interesting that she wears a huge ring on her LEFT ring finger. In central Europe married women ( of her age) would typically wear the wedding ring on her right.

This is a '55 deluxe I parted out back in 1987. It had 6 original popouts.

Doesn’t the Maltese deluxe have 6 factory popouts?
Can’t access my pics right now. _________________ 1951 Samba 20-017894

Do any of these barndoors with more than two pop-outs, have the one behind the driver open with the hinge at the front like mine does?
Or do they all have the hinge at the back/opening at the front?
Ya, that pic I posted with the option 114 does look like the rear bumper was drawn in later, and with the pivot vent wing that would make it a 53.
The pop out latches changed from the ones with black knobs to the spoons at VIN 20- 76 674, early March 1954. So that bus with the drawn on rear bumper would have had the early latches and frames.
One idea I had is that perhaps it's the early popout buses hinging at the front there, but the pic says no. |

How about the way her jacket is buttoned? |

Ooooh, that is a good point, I was trying to think of something the would give it away for sure.
Unless something is different in Europe or from that period, women's jackets have the buttons on the LEFT side so it should not have been reversed.
It looks like the buttons are on the RIGHT in this reversed pic so it is probably backward:

that's what I was wondering at first ! pic is probably still reversed ?! reversing it again would put the ring on her right hand and the jacket buttons on the left side !
that means it could be a LH cargo door bus. maybe Swedish ? doesn't directly imply RHD steering, because what we see inside the front cab door is part of the vent window frame and not a steering wheel. but of course the outer mirror is still on this side.
just for a try, here it is the other way around. buttons and ring correct, but mirror on the right side of bus, indicating a RHD vehicle. we don't know for sure.
doesn't help the pop out question either.

another question. that many pop outs and the roof vent, indicating a warm climate. what was the driving direction in Brazil in the 1950s ? I know Argentina was RHD. There was/is quite some German origin population in South America ( deer antler knobs on costume). and are these white (heat reflecting) shingles on the building roofs ? It surely isn't snow. I am not aware of white shingled roofs in Central or Northern Europe.
pic is maybe from Australia or South Africa ? would both be RHD. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

I vote we just leave it as Everett had it and call it Clara's bus. Too many similarities! haha |

just as an FYI, wearing the wedding band on the right hand is not a hard and fast rule. There are just about as many countries where they are worn on the left. I know several couples in Germany for example who wear their bands on the left.
i favor the idea that it is an old pic of Clara's bus.... _________________ regards
