I am working on restoring my 1967 Beetle, and found the following under the wire cover (red sticker over right one was removed to read words):

What I was expecting to see was:

Looking at the classifieds, it looks like the first picture might be an emergency flasher relay for a 1967 Bus? Or is it just a later replacement? Is the second one the correct, original - or is the first one correct, original for my 1967 Beetle?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks!

-Harry

The second picture is correct. Wolfsburg West has new ones.

For a while the stock relay boxes were unavailable, and old ones were questionable. As posted, they are available again, just a tad expensive.

That first photo doesn't look like a VW part, but it may be a (well-made) homebrew to use a pair of standard relays and diodes to make a functional replacement.

IIRC, the stock box grounds through the mounting (that hole in the middle of it!), so make sure it's mounted right and properly grounded.

A more involved alternative (not really recommended now that stock boxes can be found) is to use the later system, which used a more complicated switch, but a simple relay. It was more reliable and much easier to replace a cheap common relay when it does fail.

You have to rewire things... so I'd just get a new box and be done with it.

Are the diodes to keep the dash light from back feeding over to the other side?

Probably yes, but with the rest of the relay terminal hookups unknown, it's just that... a guess.

Might be this guy's unit (see blurry photos midway down):

I seem to have what this fellow is selling (different manufacturer, same setup).

Sure does look like it! But now the real thing is cheaper. But if that thing works and you can get instructions from the seller, you may be golden.

It has a VW part number on the box, but since VW didn't do 12V conversions themselves, this is certainly aftermarket, albeit a good one. I'd like to see a little more environmental protection, but a small plastic hobby box would do.

Harry, I'm not sure if you settled on the flasher relay yet but your vert DEFINITELY did not come with the two relay system that you have in it now. ALL US beetles came with the 9 pin Hella flasher relay. Now... The question is do you want a black one, blue one or silver? All would be correct but I tend to think the black one would be the most common in early 67 production.
