Many of you on this forum know me, or at least my work, some of you don't. I have a 73 Squareback, that was originally baby blue, but not any more.
The engine is a 2L Type 4 with dual Weber DCNFs, with an automatic transmission.
I have also added Air Conditioning to it as well.
I guess that I am having a mid life crisis, and want to return to my high school days. So This is my next project.
Time to build a center console (head unit in the glove box sucks), and a speaker box. One thing I like about the head unit is that it is blue tooth, and you can program it to auto answer, after a given time.
Let the fun begin _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

I say buy a vintage suitcase and make yourself some 'loud luggage'.
Just SO hard to find a nice inconspicuous place for all of those speakers.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Man I don't know . Your radio/head unit looks small yet the speakers and amp is another story. I used to have the stock radio in mine with the metal mount yet once all radios became digital none would fit plus they have these special slide in mounts. I tried to mount the radio under the dash where the old one was yet it was too deep and hit the fresh air fan plus I had three gauges mounted there so I hacked a hole in the back of the glove box for the radio plug and put it in there and it just fit so I could close the door.
Plus you have A/C so I would imagine building a console might be possible it's just there is not much room even without the A/C at least last time I looked at mine. Looks like you have 6" round speakers and 6x9's . I've seen 6" round in the area where the front wheel wells curve in I just used a pair of old RS metal box speakers and placed them there each has a 4" and a 1" and for the rear I used to lay boxes on the floor always was going to mount them on the top of the rear seat of behind it I just use the fronts now and rarely turn on the radio any more.
I see why you don't want to use the glove box I was always going to try again to make a mount where the old one was and mount the gauges under it . It just made the gauges hard to see since I made a mount on an angle.
I always found it odd that bugs and Karman Ghias had in dash radios yet they don't have the fresh air box .
If you don't need to door pockets perhaps you can build a front speaker mount there so the speakers magnets just go in the door with a housing so the speakers are close to the front and have a half pocket since as you know the doors are not deep . With your skills I'm sure you will come up with something that looks nice and works as you need it to. |

Thanks for all of you replies. KT thanks for Tram's link. I new he had made some consoles, But I tried a search and couldn't find the link (been using my phone for the last week and a 1/2). My computer was just getting to slow, so I gave it an enema (wipe). I do this every couple of years, because they fill up with so much minutia over time, that it really slows them down. However, when you have 6 HDs and a burner. it takes time to reload everything (especially AutoCAD). As usual, I'll show my build process, once I start. Have a good one everyone. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

Where are you going to power all this audio equipment from? Are you adding another fuse box?
Since the ignition has no accessory I wonder how others did their radio's.
I powered my gauges off a relay used fuse 9 which is hot all the time since there were one spare fused tap I ran that to #30 on the relay and fuse 12 hot with key on spare tap to 86 on the relay 85 to ground and 87 through a add on fuse to the gauges . Since there is not much room I long ago removed the horrid buzzer used a heavier wire gauge since the red wire was so thin plugged in there to power the radio and lighter plus another power point each has their own 10 amp fuse. The old sony AM/FM cassette has it's own 10 amp I just didn't like running a wire across the dash and not have it fused at the point of power. This radio has a switch you can set so the illumination goes off when the radio is powered off since I listened to the radio long ago sitting in the car I couldn't wire it to the ignition I just wired the yellow memory and red power together if I just listened driving I would have used fuse 12 and 9 for the memory.
You have so much more stuff. I know many radios including mine have a place to power an amp and an add on CD changer . I later got an Alpine because I thought the Sony was dying yet it has no added switch so I never put it in simply because I would have to add a on/off to kill the lighting. Now since I don't drive very much and the generator doesn't do much at idle I added a switch to kill the memory since it drains the battery.
I wish I had built a console so at least the radio would no be in the glove box and the gauges would sit under it then I could have used the slide in radio support like most autos have a spot in the dash. The console I imagine needs to be deep enough even with these slide in brackets to support the rear of the radio unless they have gotten smaller the two I have have a huge heat sink on the rear. |

Keep in mind that Multi has a t-4 engine, and as such an alternator to power things up. He's also running carbs, so no FI related issues. He can always upgrade his alt too, if he needs more power. He is running A/C though, which is a nice bonus. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Sorry that I have been gone for awhile. I lost the C: drive on my computer. I didn't lose any information though.
I have 6 hard drives on my computer (no RAID). I never store any data on C:, it just has the OS and programs on it.
So I had to reinstall the OS and various programs. Back to the question, I plan on pulling an 8 AWG wire straight from the battery, and down along the tunnel. My Type 4 engine has the optional alternator that puts out 70 amps. However, I HATE stereos that go BOOM, BOOM, BOOM.
I much prefer high fidelity sound. However, the Air Force, and the F16, did serious damage to my ability to hear higher frequencies. At the time, we were using F4s, and were switching over to the F16s. I was in the missile shop, and picking up two loads of AIM 7s, and AIM 9s, from the alert birds, on the flight line. Since the missile shop was isolated on the other side of the base, no one warned us about the F16s. I was coming back from the alert area with 16 missiles, when a visiting F16 landed. As soon as he came off of the taxi way, and was pointed in my direction, I was on the floor of the truck, and trying to shove my fingers in my ears up to the knuckles. I had never heard such a horrifying screech / howl, created by the intake vortex (my teeth ached for two days). Since then I have never had a car stereo that could produce the sound quality that I liked.
That's why I am going to try and install a high end stereo system. Not for the noise level, but to have the ability to tweak the sound curve to match my hearing capabilities. As Tram noted, with an automatic transmission, foot clearance between the tunnel and the brake pedal is extremely tight. So having a center console can make matters worse. So the challenge for me will be to overcome this limited space. I may have to alter the brake pedal, but like always, I will document all of the steps. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110
