the circled area moves a little bit ( say 1 mm) when I rock the drum with my hands and 6 and 12 oclock.
I guess this means I need new kingpins?
both sides have the same amount. There is a seal there under the uncleaned spindle lol. Wheel bearings regreased and adjusted.
excuse the grease and bad picture. |

Those are the link pins and they may only need adjusting...

That spot circled in red is the kingpin play. 1mm is a lot. There should be no noticeable play.
You don’t necessarily need to buy new kingpins, a lot of shops (including mine) can remachine those and make new bushings to match. |

FWIW, the suspension should be greased every 3K miles, which is normally the valve adjust interval. Many people omit the lube service. Who knows what the PO of the bus did or did not do? Keeping it lubed reduce wear.
Adjust brakes every 3K miles as well.
Lube spindles every 1200 miles when driving bad roads. |

I didn't think this was a link pin issue. Going on a road trip saturday so I hope it holds out, lol.

I've had the bus a while now, greased front end roughly once or twice a year which is about right for the miles. Don't know when this wear crept in. |
