Those screws are staked by the factory on the non-head end after being screwed into the shaft. Trying to remove them without
removing the staking as best you can with a dremel or similar tool frequently results in damage to the threads in the shaft or
the screw, or both. Doing that also makes their removal vastly easier, and reduces liklihood or damage to the screw-head slots. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

well i removed the staking and the screws still wouldn't budge.
Soaked with PB blaster over night- no dice.
I ended up filing down the screw heads and then carefully drilling out the screws.
Luckily the threads in the shaft remained intact. _________________ 1960 6 volt sedan- 1978 adventurewagen

Place a long enough drift or steel rod sticking up in a vice, this will be the anvil. Then get an assistant to hold the carb, assembled and ready to stake, hold carb such that head of screw is resting FIRMLY and centered well over the anvil, over the vice. Now you take a chisel or punch and using a hammer make the stake on the opposite end of the screw, which should be straight up and down, with its head on the anvil.
Doing this will assure the butterfly shaft does not get bent during staking. Avoid bending the shaft!
Bug On! Like you have a big stake in it!
Dont get bent!
I"ll have mine medium rare!
Pass the A1 please. _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

I believe the carurettors were staked using a jig to prevent damage to the shaft.
Personally I would resist staking the screws and use Loctite 243 during the assembly. Loctite 243 is fuel resistant and will allow disassembly at a later stage.
There has been enough anecdotal evidence over the years to indicate that this method works well with losing screws into the engine. |
