PLEASE tell me you had a jack stand under the van
this is nothing to take lightly.
and then we'll talk about the use of your wood blocks on the jack.
I'm not naming names in this pic, but this is a samba user here
I'd like to keep him here and not make his wife a widow or kids fatherless (if he so has any). it's not just your life that you can ruin for such an 'oversight' of safety.
please think what goes UP can come DOWN unexpectedly.. and YES I have and still likely will do sketchy stuff myself.. you need an escape plan when crawling under a lifted ton of metal.
and this is a primary reason that I always have a set of jack stands on our VW Clubs door prize table..
in this pic there are 2 mounted tires that could have (should have) been slid under to protect in event that jack fails.
concrete blocks are NOT adequate ..
think it through, let this post help be a PSA for those amateur mechanics out there.

I'm sure he "took care of things" by putting the "sudden failure" concrete blocks under there _________________ .... |

You see, i look at the photo and think, “OH MY GOD, the seem rust.”
Kidding aside, that is hard to look at. I’m assuming he survived and thankful that he did. _________________ 1991 multivan, FAS 1.9 tdi, Peloquin limited slip

Is that lumber pressure treated ? The arsenic can kill you...
These young buck who strut in here, refilling propane cans, no block, jack, and chock,
“I’ve done this for years”
Is their song of ignorance.
When you’ve done it for decades, you won’t do it that way.
The slap in the face is stupid leaving you.

Could have cropped the second pic to not fully shame the dude. A bit uncalled for, since he is only endangering himself. Good old mob internet justice.
That being said, seeing his head under there makes me start sweating. I usually do jack, two jack stands, and then still a spare tire or two with a fat block of timber on top. |

yikes.
3 ton jack stand extended, on 2.5" of wood. pulled up on the curb to get things level. factory jack.
This made me nervous enough and I wasn't crawling under the van. I was just imaging someone barreling down the street and side swiping it while I was messing with the drum. Also... earthquakes happen.
That same day I ordered HD rubber wheel chocks, a 6-ton bottle jack, and 6-ton jack stands. This factory jack kicked out once on me and I'll never trust it again.
This thread has some good info on jack/stand placement:

I was watching this video the other day. The guy almost dropped the car with jack stands in place, 2x. A little too heavy handed.
Watch at 0:20 & 3:55....

My brother-in-law sold his house to a friend who died shortly thereafter in the driveway from being crushing by his car with just a jack under it. Really drove this point home to me...just one degree of separation. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. Can someone post links to discussions on jack and stand selection?
I carry a pair of 3ton jack stands and a Hi-Lift with Gary Lee adapter.

it is good to note that a $10 rubber wheel chock will fit inside the spare tire inside the clamshell. in fact you should be able to get a pair of rubber wheel chocks in there..
*adding to my next check on mom's camper.
also to NOTE that I use silver sharpie to write on EVERY STOCK JACK.
MUST SET PARKING BRAKE 1ST
maybe we can have a decal made?
here's a scary lack of thinking it through, now I KNOW NO ONE driving a vangon can ever be this misguided, clueless and downright stupid.. but they are out there.. so maybe we can help..
changing a tire in the middle lane of the highway.

I remember the post, and the jack safety comments he got from his picture.
He promised not to do this anymore and to heed the advice given him. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

To make the picture owner feel better, I compiled some good bad photos
"One jack is fine. I do it all the time."
"i know, lets both crawl under the car without using jack stands. directly under the tire is a good spot."
