You'll need to move the filter so you can put the missing tin in place. If you don't, you'll COOK the engine and have a much bigger problem.

| The gassy smell could be a couple different things. Running too rich, proper hoses missing in the trunk from the fuel tank, gas leak or all of them. Judging by the missing parts in the engine bay I would assume all of them. Dropping the engine will be a great learning experience for you and great fro the car in general. It really isn't that hard of a job but well worth it considering what you can accomplish while it is out. |

Not necessarily, it sounds like an engine in a poor state of tune more than anything.

Yes you're definitely missing the ductwork that routes the hot air off the oil cooler and out through the front tin. That hot air is supposed to be dumped under the car and not dumped into the engine compartment where it can be picked up by the fan.
It should look like this (stolen from last page):
