I recently acquired this 56 and it has an extra interior mirror.

it looks to be a factory option or dealer add on, has any one seen anything like this before?

thanks in advance

never seen one before - so pretty certain it's not factory. what do you see in it? blind spot cover for rear to side windows or junior in the back seat? or even a female passenger's cleavage!

That looks like a Split Bus mirror.

I believe someone added that so they could check themselves out in the passenger seat.
Makeup, hair, back seat action, etc.

I do believe that you are correct ! this is a Split Bus rear view mirror, which I am thinking is from a 64, I pick this year because it turns out this old oval has a few parts from a Split bus tagged onto it.

I'm guessing the guy whom got this thing going in the late 80's borrowed the additional rearview mirror, the outside mirror and the engine! because this old bug actually has a 1500 bus engine, looks like the numbers tell me its a M216 from 1964.

engine number is 0314757 with a W1 stamped below the numbers

he also put on an extra set of Turn signals on front and replaced the rear turn signals with a more modern set. (too bad I couldn't find those in the trunk ) and he replaced the front hood with a 3 tab

here is the odd bus outside mirror :

and a photo as we prepared to tug it home
