You're in for about $4,000 to do that top, if you do it yourself.

Reading this after seeing the Ghia's front beam rot I have to wonder, are you a glutton for punishment? Laughing I like the cozy fleece seat covers Cool Chuck's Deluxe Convertible Vinyl Top Kit for 1968-72 super beetles lists for less than $700, but the wood parts, if needed, can add up quickly.

Received the new joint axle beam, but quickly realized that I had made a mistake as I did not get a complete set with torsion arms. I went ahead and returned the axle beam, knowing that my priorities will be shifting to the new project of the 1971 convertible VW Bug I just purchase as BIL’s and my intentions are to do a proper restore and flip it after having a bit of fun with it.

This will be the last update for the Time Masheen for a little while I believe, while I will be actively working on the ‘71 build updates.

Chat with you all back in a bit.

Known to poke things with a stick or best not well left alone, I had a pair of rough looking dual port head BIL provided to me previously a few months back ago and informed me I could try my luck at getting them refurbished. The first roll of the die, I had talked with a small engine shop owner, when after looking over the heads and with a grimace to his face, said he could ‘possibly’ recondition them for around $280 usd. I had let several weeks go by with the heads in a box in the back of my trunk when I finally ran across an older shop that I had visited with a co-worker years earlier but had forgotten about that specialised in VW repairs. I went to the shop and spoke extremely poor spanish with one of the mechanics in the shop whom, after a quick inspection of the valves, said he could recondition them for $160 usd. After about four days, they called me back to pick up these:

I have been contemplating if I should put these on the 1971 Convertible Bug or keep them for the Ghia… Decisions.

Although I didn’t get anything done on this Ghia this week; It has been part of a ‘build’ up where I have obtained a 2-stage 60 gallon compressor and a 90 pound sandblasting tank. The thought is BIL and I will use this to get the paint of both vehicles for a proper off-the-body restoration. I’m looking forward to getting back to work on the Ghia!

Extra bonus! When working on the 1971 Convertible Bug over the weekend, I swung by the house to drop off the truck and pickup the daily driver and I was thrilled to see my package finally arrived in the mail:

You gotta put the blinders on, building one project will empty your wallet & take up all of your time. Doing multiple projects will burn you out.

This past weekend has been some steady progress on the other project (‘71 Convertible), but seeing how things are progressing each weekend, I figure it won’t be long before the Ghia can be getting ready as I still need to do the deep dive to inspect the entire body, head to toe.

I went ahead and started to disassemble some parts, put them in ziplock bags and box them.

Working the doors, this is when I notice that the glass is indeed, very special. It was a bit tricky removing the metal harness and I could see the rubber or soft buffer was not coming off. The holes in the glass were my indication that this is special:

While working the drivers side door, I notice that some emergency work had to be done:

Getting the floor cleaned up a bit, despite the obvious holes, the metal is still pretty sturdy. I’ll be replacing regardless, but I was comparing to what I’ve been working with on the ‘71 Convertible. <sigh>

Removing the running boards, I could see that these won’t be reused:

I was able to work the chrome trim off the door using a small plastic pry tool. One strip however, I can see is held down with some worn out Phillips screws. I’ll need to work gently around these ones:

She’s starting to clean up really well. I’ll keep working this into my weekend schedule until we get ready for paint.
