I know the oil pressure relief screw changed in 1957 or so, but are the plungers and relief springs the same for early vs late 36hp engines? |

The spring and plunger is the same. The plug that holds them in is different. |

The '52 - '57 service manual mentions the change from hollow plug to solid one, at chassis # 1397440, along with the oil delivery channels being increased by 1 mm in diameter. From the drawings, the earlier hollow plug looks to have a larger threaded diameter, so it may not be possible to mix the two plugs up. Only a single spring length is given for checking purposes, and no mention is made of changes to the pressure relief piston. _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"

Awesome, hopefully the spring and piston are interchangeable then. I know the plugs aren’t because the early hollow one is too big. |

Through the years I have seen several factory refurbished 57 or newer motors, but havent seen earlier 36hp as factory rebuilt ones.
So I assume that VW didnt use the cases with the smaller oil gallerys when the new ones came. Its also more material around one of the main bearings from 57 up.
I have a september 57 factory refurbished engine in my oval, changed in Hamburg in 1964, after 118.000km. Now km is 285.000. Also have 2 low mileage factory refurbished engines on my shelves, one 57 and one februar 58. _________________ I got a historic car, every scratch got a history...
