The Cooper Discoverer M+S is back in stock at various vendors, including Walmart. I ran those on my old van and liked them. I never really got to flog them in snow, but I liked how the wide footprint handles so I ran them exclusively until the van’s untimely death. Stock alloys, no rubbing on an 85. _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”

got my Hercules today... CoO China but shipped from Canton OH, i assume the Cooper/Hercules plant. Date code 2612 so they are from when the tire was rolled out in 2012. fingertip durometer says they're fine. _________________ -dan

I nixed them mentally after reading about rubbing issues: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...p;start=40 . I'd prefer a narrower tire -- something like the Yoko Y370 but with silica for ice. I'm certain that one of the vendors caught wind and cleared out the last 30+ tires. as Autocity's inventory went from 35 to 0 fairly quick.
these tires weren't for everybody, as they're old stock..
I never could get an answer from a vendor on the DOT date stamp on the tires
but my 4 arrived and are from 2013 date of mfg..
now this will certainly bother some people.
does not bother me.. for my use or intended use of these load range D winter tires.
there just aren't alot of true winter options in a load rated 14in tire.
esp for $40ea price from autocity. |
For reference Dan, we bought a set of 27x8.5, old style BFG ATs from a shop near Death Valley once. Didn't realize until later they were already ten years old, stored most or all of that time in a steel shed in the baking sun. Maybe got lucky but ran them 30K miles until going to 16s.
No doubt that fresh is best but I think there's a lot of lawyering behind "freshness dates" on some things -- perhaps with some "replace now" fear tactics. And that van weighed 5,500 to 5,700 over the duration. Never even a flat or cracks or chunks flying off those things, despite them feeling pretty dry.
Not recommended as a practice but worked out that time. I suspect cheaper tires may make for a bigger risk but yours should be all good. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Got mine today, date code is 1213. Not horrible. I drive maybe 500 miles in the winter so ill happily roll these for another 3 winters. Its mostly to get to the ski hill and some around town driving. Well within my comfort zone
Now the real question is will a tire shop mount them since they are oldish |

I wonder about that too and know that similar things are at play with expiration dates on medications (i.e. drug makers don't want to pay the cost to test meds long enough to find the true expiration date so they just label them with whatever time period they ran the test for).
I'm not proud but I had BFG TAs on my old SUV for 11 years old before I replaced them. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

I’ve wondered too. My BFGs are “old.” I think I’ll just get a set of those Coopers and worry about it next summer. _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”

I ordered on Friday when Autoplicity had 50 sets in stock...
Monday I received notice that my payment was refunded saying they were out of stock...
Oh well |

maybe expect to see them offered at one of our fine van/bay vendors.
though we'll see how that fares for a retail shop selling 7year old tires..
I'm still happy and thinking I should have ordered that 5th after reading Idahodoug's contrac issue. _________________
