Time for an update. Wowzers.. I did it. I got the engine in, made the car running and driving. It's not running very good, but we'll get to that later.
I transferred the Vermont registration ($770) into an Ohio Title, insured it, and made sure I had daytime lights (brake lights, really). She's running good enough to go up and down the street, load on to a trailer, so it's mobile. The Dubs in Geneva show was last weekend and I was determined to make it. I loaded it up on my trailer with the 3 t4 engines friday night and set off early Sat for the 1.5 hr drive. The Touareg made it a great run, arriving I saw a field of VW's, what a great sight! I parked on the far side outside the show by some other trailers, dropped the car off and within 5 minutes I was driving into the show! I had intended to enter my V10 tow rig as well, but it never worked out. One side of the show there were lot of water pumpers it would have fit right in. ANyway, I was in heaven with all of these classic Vws. Here are some pics of the type 3s in attendance.
My car was really the biggest turd there except for the VW Beetle that was painted up to look like a turd! She has not had a bath, she has numerous rust holes, no front bumper, 50 year old tires.. what a wreck. There were other 'shabby' patina cars there but I don't think anyone else's patina was as genuine. I suspect a lot of clear coat that I don't have!
I stayed late and watched the car limbo contest (what fun!) and the prizes, then loaded up the popcorn machine and trailered it home.
I'll save the mechanical head scratching for another post.. What a great show! |

Alright guys, looking ahead, progress and questions about my 69s future.
There are a few issues I hope to work on this winter.
1. Rusty spots on the chassis
2. replace /paint/ damaged body parts
3. Get the engine running proper
1. I have four or five small rust areas to cut out and weld in a patches. Front Bumper mounts, 1 rocker and an inner fender. I have the tools but lack the experience. This will be the tough one. Other build threads are very motivational, tks!
2. I scored 2 solid front fenders, and had 1 rear. When handing them over to a shop to paint them, how do I tell them to match 50 year old patina royal red?
3. I've got a 205 K distributor I suspect is failing to properly trigger the sparks below my 32PDsits, my car stumbles bad when under load but free revs nice. will I find better success with the advance of a 205D?
Thanks much for the wisdom |

Completely go over the ignition system first. Verify you have a good points and condensor, and that your coil is good. I'm only mentioning these, as I've had a coil fail, and do exactly what you're mentioning. And Brian had the same thing happen from a condensor failing. Usually for me, a failing condensor just quits working. You might not need a distributor, but rather a very good tune up. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

You may want to check the jet & venturi combination on you PDSIT carbs. In my '64 1500E notchback I am running a 1600cc single port with '65 1500-S dual PDSIT carbs. Also I am running a 311.905.205F '66 distributor. Just like you are experiencing with you car, my car would rev fine not moving, but would stumble like it was running out of gas under load. I put the correct '66 1600cc main jets, air correction jets, & venturis. I no longer have the stumble under load & have better acceleration. |

Bob and PBR, both good things to look into, thanks. I've got new plugs, wires, points and have swapped the coil once with no improvement. Since I have a 205K distributor in a 69 (formerly injected) car I'm not sure if I should have a coil with or without a resistor. One of the smaller distributors I have says "use with external resistor". Since I've gathered parts from a 65 thru 69s, I've got a mixed bag of parts to choose from. I think I have a set of 32PDSITs from a 66 and also a 65. I'm thinking (could be wrong) if stock, the 65 PDSIT's were on a 1500 engine and the 66 ones were on a 1600. Also, I've just realized I added some displacement when I built it and should consider that when re jetting. |

Save yourself the headache of guessing and get your distributor rebuilt by someone who can test it. Been down the road where I thought it was a carb issue and it turned out to be a poorly working distributor. No way to lose when you do this _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

Jack, I think I'll take that advice and have my 205 D distributor rebuilt. Who do you recommend? Something is not quite right with it though, see if you can spot the problem...

Looks like no vac can, and possibly the wrong distributor cap. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Allrighty, time for an update. Those carbs transformed my engine. It might have been the two studs in the intake manifolds were too long and butting against the casting area that was either a vac port or a blocked off vac port, depending. But with the new carbs and shaved intake studs, this baby Purrs!! I'm so pleased. I have the two front fenders off, replacements in hand pending refinishing, and a few weld in patches waiting to go and I'll have a complete car. |

Tim at Volkbiz did my carbs as well. It was nice to bolt them on and start he engine. Some tuning and re jetting and now 27 mpg on the highway. He does the top shelf job. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Update! I found a local painter who did some tricks and painted my two solid new fenders. He used lacquer and some 3000 grit sanding pad and got a real close look to my OEM.
The engine is running good, I've got o make some progress on the rusty areas next! |

I was going to say have a look at Andy Bla's 66, to get an idea about doing the bumper mounts, but he hasn't quite gotten there yet (he's rebuilding the structure behind it first). But, you can see some of his prior prep work, where he cut out the old mounts, and welded in some new metal to build off of. You'll want to do that too. You might already have what you need in your repair sections. You might also look at what Yabbadabadoo has already done on his Aus Fastback, as I think he's already done those on his car.
I hope that helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks for the tip Bob, I did take your advice and checked out Andy's stuff. Wowzers! Well, I can say ya'll motivated me. My project is no where as bad as his, and darn if I promised myself to get better at welding. Since I have parts from 3 squares, a white one, a red one and a blue one, I am uniquely qualified to construct a Red/White/Blue harlequin Squareback. My community (Avon, OH) recently announced a 4th of July "decorate your car' parade, and since I'm working from home I considered it a personal challenge to enter the 69. In the last two weeks I welded in a bumper support patch, swapped out 3 fenders, 2 doors, painted a couple and striped a few others.
I sort of succeeded, but also failed. I attended the parade but did not drive in it. I had a rear brake dragging I could hear and smell on the short drive to the start point, I sure did not need to melt my drum and stink up the whole route, but she made her first non-VW event appearance. I can confirm she's a head turner in this attire! Thanks for the motivation folks!
Now for the pics!! Happy 4th of July Sambros!
I could not/ would not have done it without the support of the Samba community! |
