part number 211 615 231 is the left... 232 is right
jersey looker says there are 2 rights and 2 lefts, but only show 1 on this diagram. #6
questions: where do you get them? Do people use them? Where do they all get installed?

Someone made up a punch a few years ago, IIRC. Haven't heard anything in a while though. Might be worth searching the classifieds though |

There's one shim between each piston and brake pad, so 4 total. JustKampers claims to have 'em in stock, but they're
aftermarket stainless steel, and I think you have to adjust each little tab individually - if so, it's important to not make
the tabs stick out too far or they will cause pad dragging on the rotor. There's at least three hundred threads in this forum
about these shims. Some have them, and some do not. I don't know who to envy the most.

I bought a pair off of gowesty a couple of years ago. Just checked their website and they aren't listed anymore. Product #113-609-163
Might be worth contacting them though.
Edit: wrong item... those are brake backing plugs. Email search fail. It was busdepot I purchased them from. http://www.busdepot.com/211615232a _________________ 1974 Westfalia, automatic, dual-carb |

Yup. I bought a couple sets from him, and they were very good quality. Gave one set to Robbie. And I just searched the classifieds but couldn't find them.
Hopefully the guy who had them made up will make up another batch and post them for sale.
This pic from the photo gallery says they were purchased from German Supply...
...but I didn't see any on their web site. _________________ -Kent-

One of my new NOS calipers came with a set. Just one caliper - the other didn't. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

I find that is the answer to most questions.... Problem is everyone calls them something different. Or the part number has dashes or spaces or neither.
I think I will check some of those used parts guys and see if I can explain what I want, maybe they will have some.
THe bus depot link STWESTY added says the plates were for Girling Calipers. I have never heard of them. At first I thought they were a style, but they are a brand. I did not buy Girling. _________________ My Toys: '75 Porsche 914, '92 Ski Nautique and now a 1972 VW Transporter Deluxe (punch list fixing) |

The plates keep non symmetrical pistons from rotating out of position. The plates thickness may or may not be of importance to the function of the brakes, likely more so when the rotor is used passed its wear limit. |

I would just reuse the ones from the previous calipers. They are intended to keep the pistons from rotating, and are an integral part of the design.
Colin Kellogg and I just took my brakes apart a couple of weeks ago, and we had to re-punch the tabs, which had flattened, allowing the pistons to rotate. _________________ John

Re-use the old ones. If those are gone and you can't find them anywhere, I bet Ken can help. Give him a call:

it was chipwrecked that made them
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=567628&highlight=stainless+brake+shims
I bought some, then bought the rest he had from people that didn't pay for them. I have a huge stack.
IIRC, they were NOT cheap but I wanted a bunch while they were being made _________________

These plates are not unique to these vehicles there are other rigs of the era that used them. Seem a lot of shops must have tossed them routinely, I can remember scrounging wrecking yards for them decades ago. |

I did sent Ken an email today.
And yes, my 914 has the triangle shape plate. IIRC they are only on the rear calipers. _________________ My Toys: '75 Porsche 914, '92 Ski Nautique and now a 1972 VW Transporter Deluxe (punch list fixing) |

The thickness is not important unless too thick. The reason for the cut piston sould be for a noise issue or wear issue or both. It applies more pressure to the trailing edge of the pad. This helps with noise and taper wear of the pad. We do all kinds of crazy things in the lab to reduce noise (grease, slots, chamfers, multi layer shims, springs, piston location, different diameter pistons on 4 pot and above calipers) and wear (springs, piston location, different diameter pistons on 4 pot and above calipers). |

Maybe the OP should reach out to the guy that made those stainless shims to see if he has a set left. Then again, I heard he was a tool. _________________ "You're too retarded for a retard." Amskeptic |
