So..... in our kitchen we've got a Magic Chef microwave/vent hood.

It works fine, it has for years........

Our beef is that IF you are cooking on the stovetop there is a heat sensor in the hood somewhere which turns on the exhaust fan...... on HIGH!

Noisy as all get out!
PLUS you cannot turn it off or to a lower setting!!!!!!!!

What diabotical engineer designed such a stupid thing?
If I want to vent hot air....... I'll push a button and turn on the fan!

I hate that thing!

Thanks for listening........

Dave

Yeah, I'd be going for a dig to locate that sensor at the very least, if not there must be a wire between the fan and circuit board, cut out the middleman Wink

Mine does that too, mine is a Bosch. I think it is a safety deal designed to cut on at a certain test doesn't really bother me/us so we leave it alone, shut it off when we are done using stovetop.

Diabolical like sensors that automatically turn on the lights, the A.C. or heat when you enter a room, or my neighbors garage door opener that automatically closes it after 15 minutes being open. He still loves his door opener, cause he says he can control it with his telephone and will alert him when ever it opens via his telephone. Yet he is constantly having to reopen the door after each 15 minutes. He simply loves tech for techs sake, it really is stupid.

I dislike stove top microwaves, the idea of pulling out piping hot liquids at eye level or above dont seem safe, even more so when directly over a very hot stove. Seems dangerous.

The craziest vents are the ventless vents, a fan to suck the fumes from the stove or oven, a course filter to capture some grease, then the fumes are exhausted back into the room. dumb, but they exist.

Well, I was going to pull the unit and find the temperature sensor.

I started pulling screws getting ready to drop the unit when a magic screw released the control panel....... I pushed it up and pulled it away and what should my wondering eyes behold but a solid state thermo switch on the floor of the unit!

I pulled off but one wire and let it hang (it has an insulated connector) and no more irritating fan.
It still works when /if I want it to but the auto on feature is dead!

Oh happy day!!!!

Dave

Hahaha..

I am going though a second floor of three remod with the kitchen being the next to last completed (master wing remains) .. The last 2 yrs living in a construction zone..sucks... Ill say when doing it on your own spare time to save serious money ... it's sorta worth it.

One thing I was adamant about...adding a cook top vent to the OUTSIDE

We previously had the recirculating microwave over cook top combo.. Mad
I hated it..nothing worse than forcing semi filtered smoke back into a home.

So...when it was time...I plumbed in the microwave vent up tot he top of the cabinets and outside a wall with 4 inch rigid (drier) venting ...albeit a smidge smaller than normal code it makes a world of difference. It was a very short run of vent maybe 6 feet with one 90. Moves the bushes outside like a bad storm.. Wink

IMO night and day comparison. Vents well .

My wife hates the noise...even though it's about the same noise as the old refumigation option . Rolling Eyes

So far no auto sensor activates...have no idea if it even has one.
Glad it doesn't..but I'd have no issues if it did..
In most cases I despise auto functions.
I dont even like appliances with electronics....but lost another battle.. Laughing ..plus good luck finding any new ones without the Japanese timers these days.
Term coined by my Pop. Meaning ..a predetermined time of life for an electronically controlled device. I'd bet its accurate.

I guess its the little things that irritate some ..

We moved into a house 18 years ago that had a Gen Aire range. To my knowledge itís one of only a few that vent out the bottom outside the house. This frees up any hood or other obstacles above, nice idea. This unit also gave a choice as to run a fan or not.

Down-draft ranges are great, especially if there is a smoker or toker in the household. They can just turn on the fan and don't have to stand out in the yard on cold, rainy days. Wink

They also have a tendency to suck heat away from the cooktop, negating the desired effect of heating your food.

I've installed a few. I have no desire to own one.
