Hey Trevor,
I thank you for the kind words. Life has been tough here, but i am not a pitty party. Last few years has been a big lot of shit. Taking care of my mom is all I care about. Looks like we turned the corner and I'm blessed with that. Ghia still here, bus and rides coming. I just plug away, move into shop space in 8 weeks. Too much bad has gone on and I do not want to speak of it. Forward we go, kick me in the balls I won't yield. Good to come, and I want to continue to share it and help out. _________________ If you take time to do it, do it right and don't be so damn cheap.....🤙🏻

I wouldn't worry about people's reactions at all Scott. It appears to be in the spirit of "Vintage Speed" where owners back in the day used whatever was available to them to upgrade the performance of their VWs.
It's a contentious issue to try to predict what VW would have done had they been more in tune with the sporting ethos for the Karmann Ghia. It would have added $$ to what was already a product nearly twice the price of a Beetle and move the KG into direct competition with Porsche. I'm pretty sure at that time it was something VW wouldn't have wanted. However it didn't stop VW owners from sourcing performance upgrades and aftermarket part suppliers like EMPI, Okrasa, Judson all thrived on the enthusiast owner's desire for more performance and better handling. |
Hi John,
Many people don't seem to be aware that under contract between VW and Porsche, VW was prohibited from producing any vehicle which would compete against Porsche in the marketplace. This was a part of the deal Ferry Porsche struck with Heinze Nordhoff in order to secure Porsche's engineering help. In addition to no competition, Porsche got direct and at cost access deep into VW's supply chain - wherever it wanted!
Regards, and thanks for spurring Scott to write a thread about his '59!

It is hard to stop and take photos when your in motion, but that would not do any of us any good. So here we have the old rusted & seized choke cable trick. What a PITA this is. While tying to remove from both ends with liberal amounts of rust buster and heat ect. Metal fatigue set in and it snapped. It also snapped all hope of removing it. So we have to carefully remove the entire tube and replace it. I have a photo of the tools I choose to use to give you a idea. This is a delicate operation and patients (which I don't have much of) has to be used. The Dremel tool is your best friend here. Also, the selck spot weld buster tool, and a small grinding wheel on a 90 degree die grinder. I hope you don't have to do this but if you do it is not that difficult, this is I why I cut a couple more holes than usual. I did not anticipate this repair, but with the extra holes to acess all weld points, and the ability to put two hands in the tunnel it works out better. I will replace the tube with a 3/8" steel thick walled .040 fuel line which is slightly smaller diameter wise. The stock tube is around .400, this will work fine. I will show photos of the installation tomorrow.

Given where you were, that's a reasonable method. Here's the approach I have come to favor instead - less work overall and even better access.
There's more on the set of web pages I created to document the work on that car that you can find here:
http://ghiacoachworks.com/share/cars/59_MTKG_coupe/59_KG_coupe.html
And, as others have said, thanks for documenting your work. I've got a 1959 Karmann Ghia Montage Suisse, removable hard-top, based on the standard KG cabriolet which was in some ways worse, other ways better than your project and I've been knee deep in restoring it for a damned long time. When I started out, I was paying people to do the work and was always upset that while the car always came back looking shiny and to the untrained eye "repaired", every damned time the car would come back with MORE damage than it had when I gave it to them. One day I had the insight that "I can add damage just like that without having to PAY anyone!" and so I started the long journey to becoming a "metal man." And you're right; most any able-bodied person can do this, you just have to WANT to!
That said, you've sure got guts.
Much of what you've shown I either don't need to do or have already got experience with but SOME vital aspects of what I have left to do includes some of the work you've already done here, in particular attaching my NOS rockers... So, thanks for the education! And, I might want to borrow some of your tools! :-)

It looks like it adds a breather line to early fuel tanks, similar to later tanks _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

Been a while since I've added. The Cabriolet is alive and in motion. Eventually it will be done. After a long search and a long time of being taught, and honing difrent skills,l got a space. Configuring the floor space as this is said, lots of hours, but ready to go now. Great to see all the friends at Sacramento BOR, especially Danny Gabbard.

Today is the day😄. Finally moving the project to her new home after a long down time of work. Back on the horse, and moving towards completing this complex restoration.

I made my own from brake line. It works and there is no fuel smell under the hood.

Hello again Samba forum, it has been a while since I've been active here. Long story short I have been working on getting my workshop in proper working order for building and restoring. I am just about done with getting my work space fully functioning and the Cabriolet done. Currently finishing up a convertible 67, L41 2 owner Beetle then the Karmann Ghia will have the floor. Looking forward to getting back at it , having all the parts with a solid plan in order for the path to completion. I will continue to help others by showing methods and thoughts of restoration along the way. Hope to hear from you all and pick up where we last left off. _________________ If you take time to do it, do it right and don't be so damn cheap.....🤙🏻
