I am looking at a 1978 Westfalia with a VIN starting with 238 and an engine number of GE031xxx. I can see from the reference chart on this site that the engine is a 1978 engine, but the chassis numbers all start with 218, is that different than the VIN? I thought the two were the same. Can someone please clarify?

Thanks,

Ray

The second number is a model number and is not of much importance. Just ignore it.

So how do I know if the numbers match?

Send away for a birth certificate and include the engine number, if it's the one it was born with they will confirm it.

what numbers do you want to match?

VIN on dash should match door sticker, stamp in engine bay and M plate which on that is buried under the dash

no VIN has ever matched a engine number

Most importantly the VIN number on the vehicle needs to match the VIN number on the title.

What Wildthings said. Vin on vehicle to match vin on title. Many old VW's no longer have their "original " engine. Who cares? We are not talking about a 1967 Z-28 or 69 Hemi Cuda here!
