Man, I just imagine that folding up over your lap in a wreck, like a retaining bar on a roller coaster! Yikes!

If you wreck hard enough for that to happen, the outcome prolly wouldn't have been the greatest, even without the bar.

My wife's feet could use a bit of a rest, too. I've seen those bars, but the shin-snapper comments freak me out a bit.

I've thought about foam blocks of one kind or another. Perhaps I'll remember to make something, sometime.

Little things make a difference though. Design the bar to collapse on impact so that it absorbs a good bit of energy while it is doing so and you can walk away verses getting the body bag treatment.

don't think I would want to even try that. far too specialized work there and could quite possibly make it worse in a crash if done incorrectly.

having said that at least Kamei had the sense to make the parcel trays out of tissue paper so you didn't get amputated at the knee

To Skillz' point, you need a full cage to do anything against most modern vehicles. And to my point, even if you had a cage, there is no crumple zone to absorb any of the energy. Therefore the jarring for your wreck will likely result in severe injury if you aren't crushed already.

the best they got it was the vanagon and after that the cab forward design for passenger cars was shelfed

inside the nose and doors of a vanagon is that crumple cage you speak of

See my giant yoga block solution offered above. It works pretty well, and it is just a foam block. It can also be shaped, if you like, to make a wedge or whatever fits best.

Seems like a good deal. I've got some very dense foam in the garage, I could probably cut some up and make a cube. If I wanted to get real fancy, I could cover it with some nice plaid fabric!

If you're going down that route Steve, you need to get fit while you sit:

This is what my wife uses as she is pretty short! Plus I can toss it in the back when a taller passenger rides with me.

That's why we are installing the Shin Snapper. Joe forgot them, gotta teach him a lesson. Its a shame really. Just have to make it an "accident".

FYP.

Perhaps I could sew up a cover out of the plaid material.

Hello old friends! It has always surprised me that Latest Rage never produced the foot rest. I only made them for my own Buses, but there were at least 2 other guys that were selling them here at one time.

The roll cage looking thing is similar to the one I saw in the '90's that inspired me to make my own that wouldn't cause my passengers to fall on their faces because they got a foot stuck in that contraption.

I believe the other one pictured was made by username "dragonbyu"

Randee"Randar" also made them for a bit. He was a good hang and always interesting to talk to. RIP.

The best options are definitely the ones that provide a use outside of just foot rest for the front passenger. space is limited enough as is.

maybe something as simple as a cheap folding stool would work well. folds flat when not in use and could be useful elsewhere.
