Can anyone tell me the advantage or increase hp, going from a single carb to duals on a standard 1971 1600 engine? |

Without knowing exactly which brand & type of dual carbs, I can only guess 4-6 HP increase. It should be a noticeable feel in a lightweight Fiberglass Dune Buggy. You can also see a 3-4 MPG increase in fuel mileage when duals are tuned correctly.
Before you buy any Dual carb kits you need to look at the clearance of the body and the exhaust system to see if there is enough room. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

VW claimed a 6 hp gain on the type 3 engine with dual Solex carbs (34mm I believe) and stock exhaust. They tended to idle a bit rougher than a single carb but acceptable.
Dual 40mm Kadrons work reasonably well with good linkage and tuning but again the idle and off idle cruise will suffer a bit from rough running.
A warning here: If you have dual cannon exhaust any single throat, dual carb setup will give you a headache trying to get to run right much below 2500 rpm. Drivability around town will be poor as will mileage. Change exhaust to 4/1 for much better results.
Dual Webers or Dellortos is the deluxe way to go and can be found used in good condition for as cheap as new dual singles if you shop around. These carbs are not effected nearly as much by dual cannon exhaust systems. You won't be sorry you bought these but do beware of cheap Chinese copies!
Also some dual carbs do not produce a high enough vacuum signal at highway speeds to operate the standard distributor vacuum advance pot. Something to consider. Another thing to think about is that not all dual carbs have provision for cold starting (chokes) so winter starting may be compromised depending on where you live. |
