I am about to put the engine back into my car. 1963 Beetle with stale air system.
Something that has me unsure are the heater flap levers. I don't know the shape(s) they are supposed to be in.
The bend in each lever seems to make the pulling action of the cable impossible.
Are mine bent grossly out of shape?
The way I can figure it, when I turn the heat on, I turn the knob on the center tunnel counterclockwise. This pulls the flap up and opens the inner flap to allow heat to come forward into the cabin.
When I manually pull on the cable holder, towards what would be the front of the car, in the direction of where the cable comes from, nothing happens. On both sides, the only way to get the arm to move, and the rear flap to shut, is by pushing the lever arm up, towards the back of the car, which seems counter-intuitive to me, as the cable, when attached, pulls from the front of the car.
Is everything correct here, and I am I just not seeing how this works, or are these are lever arms bent out of working shape? _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Your arms are grossly bent.

Thank you.
In the interim, I just now found another picture, arrow added by me.
I will now see about bending them back, and reinforcing them, if possible. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”

Should not need reinforcing, as long as you make sure to disconnect the HE cables before dropping the engine. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

The engine is on the bench, and I was able to straighten the levers, as well as the slightly smooshed left side cable holder.
That's probably how they got bent in the first place - someone prior to me forgot to detach the cables before dropping the engine.
Thanks to all for the info and pictures. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”

During my engine R&I I am surprised that I didn't lose anything until I discovered, yesterday, that I can't find the small brass cylinders with the holes and screw that fasten the heater cables to the levers at the heater boxes. They look like the one that holds the accelerator cable to the carb.
I am asking here what they are called so I can do a search in the classifieds, unless someone here happens to have a pair to sell.
Thanks! _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”
