Here is some of my Dolly Parton work on my apron! I am trying to use as much OG split metal to help keep 90% of the car true to its roots. I know its easy to buy an new split repop now and after paint most people won't know but I will so the battle continues.

Just read this entire thread. Man, I am IMPRESSED at your skill. Very very good work!
May I ask? What was the process or steps you took to clean those parts so well before you powder coated them?
I'm starting my Restoration next month and would love to know how you made every part look so clean! Thank you!

Thanks I appreciate it. I don't use a lot of chemical for rust removal unless its on cases or such, but on steel or solid pieces of metal I do feel the best way to remove rust is sand blasting as long as the parts don't have pockets for the sand to get caught in.
Plus then you will know for sure the rust is complete gone and after a good wipe down she's ready for paint.
I hope this helps.

Removed the 1970's rigged metal work right front quarter. Its super fun it only has 80 to 100 welds to drill out!

I finally built a roller for the body work. It has made the metal work process so much better go figure.

Good for you, preserving as much original metal as you can.... and not being afraid to try to to metal work that you haven't done before. It really isn't that hard. Trick is not to be overwhelmed by the whole project and for a day/night in the shop, focus on one panel, or one area, or one square INCH and just get that right. Hammer and dolly, bend, shot bag, and then come back the next night and look at it again.
I did a similar whole front quarter replacement on my '57 some 25 years ago now. Really had no F'n idea what I was doing when I started!!! _________________ John Henry

This approach does not work when you have damage over a large area. You have to do some work in one area, then move to another area, then another. When you return to the first area, it will respond better than when you left it. _________________

Hey Mark....very cool! I am restoring a Dec 51 Standard right now. Jason Wrenn is the mastermind for our metalwork and we are getting close to wrapping that part of the build.
I noticed on the whiteboard in one of your pictures that your standard is an Oct 51 Car? If you plan to build it back to stock and you don't have a Oct 51 engine case, send me a PM. I *think* (need to check) that I have a late Oct 51 engine.
Cool to see your progress and thanks for the photo updates!

Thanks G's for all the kind words!
I have pieced together this Hoffman car with parts from all around the world.
I think that is the best part of being a split owner trying to find the correct stuff and do the car justice for its year and rarity. Finding parts state side is a chore and next is trying to get parts from Europe at some what an affordable price.
$plits + USA = How much is shipping from Europe?
I will keep the updates coming! |

Found some fun under the rust and old repair work. A lot of dolling and started to shape up.

Great project! I didn't know inner wings were available. Mine gas genuine but later panels with greater luggage space. |
