Looks awesome, the hard work is paying off! My son and I just rescued a ‘66 a couple of weeks ago from a gentleman that was using the bus for storage the last 40 years. No transaxle, engine, decklid, apron or bumper but we’ve been able to get some of the stuff already. Your journey is inspiring us to work on “Cap’n Jack” (Sea Blue/Cumulus White=Ocean=sailing=pirates=everyone’s favourite pirate “Cap’n Jack” Sparrow). We’ll do a sympathetic restoration and keep as much original paint, blend as needed. I’ll post some pics later. Keep up the good work!!

Wow now that is a surprise !!!
To me Eve is the one that got away.
Because of its history and its condition (original yet good enough to be used as-is) I had offered to buy Eve from the californian owner when he originally put it up for sale (at the time it was listed at 15k$) and had even arrange its shipment back to France. But we never closed the deal. I guess the saler wasn't really ready to part with the bus then...
You are doing an impressive work, I didn't realize so much needed to be done on Eve. How much replacement do you think you still have to do? Will it still be Eve then or an aircooled version of Theseus' ship?
Keep up the good work, Eve deserves it.
Cheers

Hi cotegary! Thank you for your post. So nice to hear that our little bus project is inspiring people on the other side of the world. Cap'n Jack sounds very cool - do you have an own thread too? Very Happy

Wow! It's a small world. I often have been reading about people that wrote with the old owner in California and tried to buy it - but i guess no one was as close to fixing the deal as you! On the one hand i am sorry for you, that you couldn't buy it - but on the other hand it is good for us, we just love it.. even if we are still working on the bus, but we enjoy every single bit! Very Happy
We had lots of contact with the previous owner from California too. This bus was his entire pride - he loved it too much just like a family member as he said himself. So i can relate why he often tried to put it up for sale and then decided not to do it.

Thank you! Yes at first we also didn't think that it would need that much work but after surfacing the original paint lots of things turned out and we decided to better do it right. Of course we would have loved to keep the old Eve and her used look but it just was not possible for us as she needed more attention than we thought at first. For us it is still "Eve". We kept the name - i understand your idea about the Theseus ship and somehow its right. She is not the same anymore. Its like an old lady that received a facelifting and a few other beauty surgeries.. but the core is still the same Laughing Thank you, we will do our best!

So as i have not been posting any updates here since Sept. 2018 please prepare for lots of new photos now. Razz

After the new outside paint job in late summer 2018 we were a little bit lazy for a few weeks but in autumn we did some work again. Mostly disassembling the window frames and sanding them.. as well as the bumpers.
See blog post here:
Autumn work 2018

Most annoying thing were the Pop-Out windows.. 85% of all screws were stuck without any chance of opening. Only possibility left was to drill them.
(the screws in pic #3 look very good. but most looked like the ones in pic #4)

Due to our available resources we hardly couldn't do anything during winter. But as soon as spring arrived, we put the bus out of hibernation and started working again in March 2019:

And look what we found! A magnetic badge from "Buses by the Bridge" Meeting in 2006. The 10th Anniversary. I looked through all TheSamba pics and searched the web for photos of that meeting but i couldn't spot our bus on any pic.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

First we sanded down the fuel tank and the lower tray of the dashboard.

As you may have noticed, we just painted the outside of the bus during the precious summer (2018). The reason for that was because we had less time, less space (small garage - so we are forced to work outside and depending on good weather). So we thought it was best to do the outside first after all of the metal work. So thats why summer 2019 is all about a paint job on the inside of the bus. Here is how the inside looked after removing the interior fabrics around the window frames.

But before these windows received attention, we removed the old headliner:

Wow, some nice progress!

Is this a disc that just removes glue or is that from the scraper?
It looks like you got most of the glue off but the paint is intact:

So after all those ugly pics - here is something beautiful again: (July 2019)
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Does anyone remember our paint job from last summer - at the bottom of the bus? As the result did not convince us, we sanded it down a bit and did it right. Primer + Seablue paint again. not the best pic quality tough..

Hi Everett! At first i used the scraper but if you don't use it careful it leaves very light scratches.
Then i received a useful hint about this rubber disk and it worked wonderful - as you said it din't attack the paint and removed the glue. Very Happy

That is some great progress Alex ! Wow! loving all the tedious work and sweet new paint, even if a bit over restored.
That rubber disc for removing old glue we need to talk about! seems to work just fine !
Hoping to see Eve on the road soon. Kals 2020 ?

September 2019 Update.

In this pic you can not just see both of us, as it is a father-son-project.. But the main reason why i want to show this photo is because of the blue color on the inside of the passenger door. Dad decided to do it like that as he liked to paint it in a more perfect way. Currently its the only pic of the door paint job that i could find.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So you would not bet how strange the bus looked to me after we mounted the front bumper again. I was totally used to see it without the bumper Laughing
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Sadly i have no pics at the moment but they have to exist somewhere. We also pulled in the new cable circle. Went easier than expected!

and then it was time for some new headlights and indicators:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Shortly after, the rear lights have been fitted. All of them are just mounted provisionally as we wanted to test how they fit.. and of course we liked the optic. Cool

Here is a pic that i also wanted to share with you - game night with a friend. Digging out the Playstation1, Game Cube and N64... with loads of Mario Kart races on top of our garage:

And then it was time for some bling bling again.. The chrome deluxe trim - old vs new:

And this is how the bus looks now:

stills lots of things to do... currently trying to fit the new headliner - stay tuned for the next updates!

Servus Günter Very Happy Thanks for the compliments!
Yes it's a nice little tool. worked really good down in the walk through area, but it hardly removed anything from the ceiling.. Sad
Let's hope so! The Kals-Meeting would be great but it nevertheless is an ambitious goal. Think
