Guys I have searched around for a chart to us what swingaxle I have but maybe I’m going off the wrong number. The big number under the passenger side of the tranny that looks hand stamped is 9527557

You can go thru the "Production Figures" in the "Progressive Refinements" here:

"27" is the positive mold number.

"113.301.103" is the case part number. You can look that up in the original VW dealer parts manual for the type 1. That is thru the "Upcoming" button at the top of that same web page.

"D" is the letter suffix, meaning that the part number was improved/redesigned since the original 113 301 103 was first produced. Then came the "A" version, "B" version, etc...

Really in the end though the transaxle you have, has most likely been rebuilt at least once if not many times since it left the factory floor. It could have been originally built for a bus or beetle/Ghia, or type 3, and been rebuilt for another type of VW since then. Could even been rebuilt with a mixture of gears from different models of VW.

The technical section lists 1965 transaxles starting at 7552095, and ending at 8131843, so I would say yours is around late 67/early 68. Does it have a 12 volt small starter bushing? If so, it’s likely a 4.12 r&p with 3.80/2.06/1.26/.89 1-4 gears.

Thank you fellas. I had suspected it was a late 60s.
So this would have a taller ring and pinion then the original 1960 correct ?

Well the 1960 owners manual (accessible thru the "Technical" button above) for 1960 shows a 4.43 R&P. So yes, it would have had a higher geared R&P back in its first build, but now it could have a 4.375 or even a 3.875 R&P or remotely possible even a higher geared R&P is installed.

Back in the mid 1980s got our 1963 H. Ghia that someone had replaced the stock .89 fourth gear with a stock bus .82. So instead of 60 MPH @ 3,000 RPM, it did 65 MPH, but had a gearing gap between the top of third at 45 MPH and bottom of fourth at 50 MPH.

The walk thru panel camper we acquired in the early 1990s, came with a transaxle that topped out at 3,000 RPM @ 35 MPH, instead of the stock 47 MPH in fourth.

You can wire in a tach for a 10-15 minute drive, and see where the 1,500-3,000 RPMs are in each gear, then do the math to see what you have in there. Most of the vintage "Sear's Engine Analyzers" have a tach feature built into them, and are a nice tool to have for the dwell, voltage and other useful features. Have picked up those for dirt cheap (most for $5.00) at all car swap meets, or one can get such for a bit more thru Ebay.com if more in a rush.

It depends on what you are wanting the trans for. The later trans does have a higher ratio ring & pinion, but if you’re specifically comparing final drive of 4th gear, the combo of the ring & pinion/4th gear are a very similar ratio in both the 60/67 transaxles. They do have different characteristics/ratios in 1st-3rd though.
