The new wheels and tires look great. Glad to see the top still works, it hasn't been up like that in like 12 years

I thought that was just for old two speed automatics? Gotta check my 1972 used car dealer instruction/sales manual.

So, I drove it around the block once it was warmed up. I was going about 40 and it stuttered then came back. Another couple hundred yards and it died after a stop sign. Restarted and I made it home.

So, I’m thinking it felt like a loss of ignition so I added a small 12v battery that I wired directly to the coil so it would eliminate a problem with the ignition switch. I went for another drive close to home.

This time I got a little further, like 3/4 mile, and it died. Crank crank crank and no start. After 10 minutes it started and drove the 1/3 mile up hill home like normal.

I’m thinking coil

Why wouldn't it be fuel related?

When it’s fuel you feel a loss of power that’s not immediate like this. In this case it was more like just turning off the key

Normally I’d say ignition switch but in this case I bypassed it with another battery hot wired to the coil +

I just looked at the engine pics I supplied you with...….that coil on the engine is like 20+ years old. Glenn's 019 was purchased in like 2007 and he had all new parts on it original German Bosch stuff...…..I don't know if he still sells the venerable cast iron distbs. any longer...…….

After careful thought and consideration, it could simply be operator error.. Laughing

Probably just needed to shift to the third. 40MPH in 2nd is too fast, his oil was probably too thin and he tore up his bearings. Time for a total tear down for sure.

Nice to see that gear oil is rated for both GL-4 and GL-5 applications.
