Recently I replaced the rear cabinet. It did not have the rear most door. I sourced another door for it. However as you can see it doesn't quite fit properly. The top shape is a little too narrow for the opening. I had another rear door and it too was the same size. The cabinet looks like a normal westy brown one. It apparently there was a small change made at some point. Anyone familiar with this better yet do they need my door and have one that fits my opening?

Actually, it was more of a model change.
All Joker/Club Joker models have the tall door. And all California/Atlantic have the shorter door.
California first appeared in late 88, and the Atlantic in early 89. But there were some overlap Joker production after that (up to 90 I believe). |
Hate to be a pedant, but my Euro spec 1989 Joker has the short door. _________________ '69 Squareback RIP

Just thought of another one. The rear apron below the rear bumper on the really early vans didn't have the notch in the center. The notch was added so there was clearance for the Westfalia style tow-hook.

By "Slot" I am guessing you mean this dimple (beneath my hitch)....
Does anyone have a photo of a non "Slotted" early rear apron?
1986 rear apron......

On the topic of the "slot" or "depression" in the center of the bodywork under the rear bumper, I've been researching this by looking at tons of photos.
All the 1985 & later vans have the depression.
All the 1983 & earlier vans don't have it.
In 1984 almost all DON'T have it but a few (perhaops late production) seem to have the slot.
For those of you with 1984 vans, can you please chime in on whether your '84 has the depression or not?
I've seen many times where the year of the van is not what the owner actually thinks it is. There seems to be so few photos of 1984 vans with the slot that I'm considering that those few might actually be 1985 models.
Check your year with the VIN decoder here:
https://www.vanagons.org/
Scroll down, the VIN table is at the bottom. 8th character from the RIGHT will be an E for 1984 models.

10/83 production on my ‘84, I don’t have the recess.
I bet it’s a end of production thing as the ‘85 models drew near to being built in later ‘84. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

Can you post any details of what you know?

Early versions had a small badge (and seem to be very brittle). Think the change is 1985
Later, larger badge
Plus of course with/without silver surround, square or round headlights etc _________________

Some think that if your beetle has a padded dash, it's an engine donor. Some think that if it has push button door handles, it's a boat anchor.
