Spare tire location on Typ 82E?

Hello! A non-VW person has a VW question!
I'm building a 1/35 model http://www.ryefield-model.com/Item/Show.asp?m=2&d=732 and the kit shows the spare in a horizontal position but some photos of restored vehicles have the spare between the lights.
Which is correct?

the model has the under bonnet detail that matches the 4x4 kdf cars like the type 87 - ie a rectangular fuel tank and a blanked off panel behind where the jerry can is.
the 82e had the type60 kdf body which had a barrel fuel tank, metal 'ears' at the sides and an open back to the spare wheel well (as per the photos of real cars above)- see second air force's model in the model forum
