I have not installed it in the car yet but I think I will sandwich it between 2 pieces of plexiglass then Velcro it under the dash so I don’t have to drill extra holes. Hopefully I will get it done this week. I have been using it in the garage using a old 12v laptop cord. I am just using some old bookshelf speakers that are in an old suitcase. It has an fm mode but there is no antenna and all it is is fuzz! I never use the radio so this is fine plus it was cheap.

Got some coco mats, I have mixed reactions on the natural color with the grey but I love them and that is all that matters. I was surprised how thin they were compared to the ones I had in the 1980s.

Wow Empi, you can’t even make a gasket right! Cut out is supposed to be on the inside like on the left, somehow this is what I got on the right. Crap like this is why I try my best not to use Empi parts. SMH!

More crappy parts, this time not from Empi but from Autozone. I know, I know, why would I buy parts from Autozone? Well, I needed the part and I didn’t want to wait for 5 days to have it shipped to me and Autozone had it in stock. The part was a transmission input shaft seal. The website said it would fit and I already tossed the original so I couldn’t compare it. After installing, I drove the car approximately 1 mile through the neighborhood and I am dumping gear oil all over the place. I pulled the engine to find the seal on the shaft not even in the transmission any longer. I am getting closer to getting the car done but crap like this sure is getting in the way.

I mounted it under my dash inside an electrical box. Bluetooth worked fine with my phone as the controller but I had to drill some holes in the metal box for the infrared of the remote to work correctly with a thumb drive. The price total for the board and electrical box was about $13. Does it sound like a $300 stereo? No, but it sounds pretty good for $13.

Finally after all these years working on this car, she is legally on the road for the first time since 1978. I have only driven about 5 miles through the neighborhood and to the gas station. I need to bring the front end up a little as I have scraped the anti-sway bar a couple times but other than that, I wouldn’t change a thing. I think the hardest thing to get used to is seats with springs in them bouncing all the time and climbing out of such a low car. I totally love the way it turned out and it definitely takes me back to the good old days I had driving them in high school.

Yeah I was surprised with how bouncy my beetle was compared to my lowered bus the first time I drove it.
I love how you used the gray primer to cover the new panels and not try to blend in spray can red. I think it suits the looks of your car.
Did you have to do any fender lip repair? I have to tackle it on mine and was wondering how best to approach it. For the buses they sell wheel well lips and its a simple cut and replace.

I guess it isn’t any more bouncy than beetles I drove years ago, I am just so used to driving modern cars, and how they feel. As for the primer, in all of the areas that needed a replacement panel or rust repair, I wet sanded the areas down to the original anthracite grey then if I welded in a panel I used anthracite grey and blended it to the original paint. I didn’t have any well lip repairs to do other then a couple dents that I tapped out with a body hammer. The fenders have tons of dents in them but it gives it character.

So far the car has been running pretty good since she has been plated. My horn will start blowing for no reason every once in a while and I think I have that taken care of now. I found some hella lights at an antique shop and painted the inside with krypton glass paint. There are a few things I need to do but so far I love her.

I have had a couple people ask how I did the graft of the ragtop. Most people I see cut about an inch around the ragtop and sit it on top of the car, cut a hole then weld it on. Then they have body work to do all the way around the ragtop this is actually how we did my first one......
There is a better way to do it, but this can’t be done this way if the windshield sizes are different (can’t put a pre 64 ragtop in a 65 and later Beetle this way)
On the this car, I cut the donor top about an inch around the sides and about an inch past the ragtop mounting holes in the back but I did not do that in the front. In the front, I cut from the front lip down to the windshield. I then drilled out the welds along the windshield. I made the same cuts on the car I was grafting the ragtop onto. I then finagled the ragtop section into the car and welded it in. Confused why I did it this way? Ok, Doing it this way I was able to do all of the welding underneath where the aluminum rails go and also under the ragtop canvas in the back so the only welding this is exposed after the rails and canvas is on is two 6” welds from the front lip to the windshield. I then had to drill the holes in the back where the canvas mounts and weld the spot welds in the windshield. I would much rather do two 6” spots of bodywork than all the way around the ragtop. Sorry I didn’t take more pictures.
