Ok. I am getting ready to try to run my engine for the first time since the rebuild. Bad Bug came with an xr700 system. I wired the red to positve, black to neg, yellow to -coil and +coil to switched+. I am getting an spark beween the center of the coil and the negative coil contact and the xr700 module is getting warm. What do i have wrong. I put everything in as it was installed before i took the engine apart.

If you do not have documentation....

https://static.summitracing.com/global/images/instructions/xr700%20instructions.pdf

IF you have it wired like in FIG 19, you should be good...

Thanks for the link. What is the ballast resistor? I did not find one on disassembly of the engine.
While i am asking. How do i set the initial timing for this one?

Basically its a voltage drop resistor to drop the voltage to the coil... VW for the most part don't use them, so you can probably ignore it....

No need for a ballast resistor, especially if you’re running a blue coil.

It sounds like you have it wired properly. I haven’t really paid attention to how warm it gets, but I will try to remember to check next time I drive it.

I’ve been running this ignition for over 20 years, and it has been great.

I just drove about 15 miles. The module is warm, but not untouchably hot.

Ive never seen one that didnt get warm, and some do get hot. we used to put the mopar elextronic ignition an almost everything. very cheep and reliable. and leave out the ballest and you have a MSD. some of the mopar boxes have built in non adjustable rev limiter. also if it's a mag pickupo like msd or mopar or ford's it has a built in retard ...all mag pickups do thus checking total timing is needed. some seem to have more than others.possiably magnet strength.

Thank you so much for the tips and info. Those really helped me and i was able to figure what was wrong. I was able to fire it up. First time in at least 17 years that this engine ran. I had to replace a bunch of stuff since it was seized due to about a gallon of water in it. But what an awesome experience to hear it run.

THANK YOU!

Now on to the next step.

Glad to hear that the age might not affect function. I am sure mine is pre 1993.

Not sure if this belongs in here. I started the engine over the weekend and noticed that the driver side is pretty much cold. Cylinder 1 and 2 are nice and hot fluctuating around 310F and 3 and 4 barely make it to 110F. I checked spark and it does have spark on 3 and 4. Also double checked the wire order. What could be wrong?

It has dual webers. The id is in the picture. I had rebuild both of them using the online rebuild guide. The spark plugs are not fouled.

IT's possible the carbs are not balanced properly, if one side is hot it usually means its carrying the load and a bit rich (fuel & air), and the cool side is lean (fuel & air) and not doing much work and is being carried by rich side, usually one leans out the rich side (back off the idle speed screw some) and richen up the lean side by increasing setting of idle speed screw...

And also JB Weld those lead plugs at the base of the carbs. They will fall out at the worst possible time Shocked

You were absolutely right. I started back at the basics and went thru the carb settings and it is running so much better. I need to tweak it more when its a little warmer on the weekend. Awesome. Thanks so much for your time and for sharing wisdom!
