This morning I sanded the glazing putty smooth and shot some self etching primer. To get inside the louvres on the back side of the welds I had to make a 360 degree spray nozzle using a little clear hose, a plug on the far end, and a small drill bit to make 4 holes in the tubing. So it's coated well inside and out. Want to keep the rust away for another 60 years hopefully!
Meanwhile, still waiting to hear about furlough. They'll probably tell us to go to work without pay for awhile _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

Long story short, when I bought both beetles I recognized the best (paint) set of rims I had were on the ‘58 and the ‘64 was the daily driver candidate, so the rims were swapped between the cars. Then a new set of Nankangs went on the ‘64. The ‘58 chassis inherited the ‘64’s rims except for one...the empty spare rim from the ‘58. Now, fast forward 5 years to today. I bought 5 Coker Firestone 5.60R15’s for the ‘58. I am not putting those tires on the really rusty rims. That is coming up in the near future...wheel restoration that is. I’ve ordered the correct colors of paint, L336 deep blue and L82 silver white for the rims and that’s about a week out from arriving. Meanwhile, I turned my eye to the one remaining ‘58 rim. Apparently, when the P.O. painted this car Barney purple, they also painted the rims black except for the empty spare. It was nasty...rusty orange. I just assumed it was black like the rest. So, I sat it on a shelf and there it stayed for 5 years. Yesterday morning, I stuck it in a citric acid bath overnight. This is what came out of the bath this morning
The color was under all the rust! I have a pattern to go by now.
Since this car will never be a concourse quality car due to the front end damage, and let’s face it, I’m just not that good, I’ll paint the ‘64’s donor rims to match the original wheel. It’s nice to see all the original paint under all that rust. Citric Acid...it is amazing!

Yesterday I pulled a wheel off the Moroccan pan. It looked like this.
Lots of surface rust. No pitting, but everything is evenly coated rust.
An hour and a half later the tire was off. I forgot how big a pain in the rear de-mounting a tire was. Then I dropped it in the citric acid bath about 7pm last night. 10:30 this morning it looks like this
My wife has decided I should switch wheels back to the 58 from the 64, “So, the right wheel years will be on the right car.” Ugh!
I think I’ll take the remaining tires and rims to Mavis Tire to de-mount. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

It’s amazing how resilient these wheels are. I’ve preserved many wheels for people who figured they were a lost cause.
What are your plans for the one wheel in original paint? _________________ L245 Original Paint Light Bronze 1958 Ragtop

Looking good.
By the way, citric acid has always been my rust removal process of choice like yours. It's cheap, biodegradable and in my case I can immerse my hands in it without any stinging/burns etc.
I have a 100 gallon plastic vat that I immerse everything I can fit into it. The only issue is that it leaves a "Plimsoll mark" (i.e. like the line on a ship) if you leave anything out of the liquid. I learned this the hard way when acid dipping my doors. They didn't quite fit in the vat and after treatment I had no rust in any of the seams or bottom, but had a nice mark where the steel had been slightly eroded by the acid. This mark comes off when sanding so no big deal.
Leaving the part in for a few days can also remove most of the old paint as well although not good on epoxy etc. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery

Great to read through your thread. I had forgotten all about it. I am doing much the same thing with a '54:

Awesome Don! It’s definitely been slow going the last couple of years. Between shift changes at work and a promotion, I’ve not had a lot of time. I’ve taken the last 2 weeks of the year off and started getting things in order to resume work on the Moroccan. Tires and wheels were done so I could roll the chassis around again. Got my garage cleaned out and now I have 4 pan bolts to drill out and re-tap. After that I’ll paint the bottom of the body and get the interior painted. Then I’ll mate the body and pan.
I’ll look for your thread, cheers! _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

Interior paint is about 7 days out. I decided to work on some sculpting today to finish out the right front quarter panel. As a refresher, this car had been hit on the right front corner and repairs on it were shoddy to say the least. That and rust formed as a result of metal fatigue and crap-tasting repair job, somebody did.
This was from March 2018, after I hammered a bit trying to retrieve the basic shapes pressed into the panel.
Rough. But better. I ended up replacing the bumper mount area entirely.
The after shot
Yesterday, I started hammering again. And then today I was ready for some filler.
Two thin layers and it’s primed
