|
|
I’ll be dropping the engine out of my ‘67 Beetle soon to install a thermostat, and to replace the leaking main oil seal and o ring (again ), the torn engine to body seal, the clutch disc, and the flywheel.
Since I‘m a home-garage hobbyist, I don’t have a dial indicator. I was planning to use the Empi End Play Measuring Tool and feeler gauges to measure the crankshaft end play. Is this method accurate enough for my needs, or should I spend the $ on a dial indicator and magnetic base?

I used that same tool, and have used a dial indicator. Both work well and as was mentioned just take your time and double check your measurements. I would check the end-play before you remove the flywheel and go from there, you may be within spec. to begin with. |

I have used both tools successfully. The dial indicator is perhaps more precise but either tool works. Do the double or triple check as previous posters have mentioned.

never reuse scored, warped, bent shims. These are bearing surfaces and mush be smooth and flat. used ones some times get trashed. only use good ones. ideally the end play has not changed since built. if it changed a lot, something is wrong
You can also measure end play at the pulley end.
One time my 36 hp engine ran rough, knocking noise. I found the pulley to be moving back and forth, thus thought the flywheel came loose. Pulled to motor to tighten the flywheel, and found it tight. Problem was the crankshaft had broke in two, right thru a bearing section, the jagged break held it together enough to allow me to drive. scratch on crank shaft!

That happened to my dad's 38 Chevy in the 1960s. Rough running but still driveable and the crank had snapped at a main bearing!! |
