^^^ x2.
If I had that pan I would put a frame around it and hang it in an art gallery.

Indeed a work of art. I’m looking forward to the rest of it

While it is indeed worthy of being hung on the wall of an art gallery, that wouldn't allow anyone to enjoy using it which IMO is half of the "beauty" in any vintage Volkswagen.
On the other hand, if a real life Karmann Ghia version of one of these old Wiking promotional VW Beetle model bodies could actually be made for it, ...
... that would combine the best of framing it for diplay and being able to drive it.
WWWWD? - What Would Wonder Woman Drive?
Well if her choice in airplanes is an invisible one, then I'm guessing her car would be an invisible Karmann Ghia with a pan like that. |

While it’s beautiful, I see a couple of issues. Unless this is to be a static display piece, you need to get rid of the shitty urethane steering coupler as these are known to fail with little provocation.
The brake hoses should be kept as short as possible & the current routing of the front hoses will lead to chafing on the tires &/or the pan upon steering hard lock. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Looks nice! Lots of time and money invested!
Rotate those axle boots 90° you don't want the seam flexing like you currently have them.
Dave |
VW manuals show boots parallel to ground with seam towards rear of car (3 o'clock on drivers side, 9 o'clock on passenger side), but I install them with seam slightly raised, to roughly 2 & 10 o'clock. Less propensity for leaks, In my years of swingaxle ownership experience.

I pulled my Ghia out of the garage, under its own power for the first time in 15 years. _________________ Volkswagen!

I replaced the transmission & then finished installing my torsion housing truss & skid plate.

And began laying a bead on it.
Ah, what the hell, while it's up, it's a great time to fit the skid plate that I got several months ago.
And now the Ghiapet has some underpants.

On Sunday I got the brake cylinder wired right (and also replaced the steering column tube horn ground wire, while I was down there). It can now be seen as it decelerates...
...too bad it doesn’t run.

Got my '64 Ghia's long-overdue annual NY State safety inspection a few days ago, and took it for a 75 mile drive today. I was struggling with a fuel starvation issue for the past 3 years, and finally resolved it a few months ago.
Today I drove up to the West Point Military Academy area on the western side of the Hudson River, and took the old Storm King Highway (NY Rt 218, built over 100 years ago) to a small turn-out. This spot is about 420 feet above the river, and I was lucky to not encounter another car here. Shot is looking south along the Hudson River. Air temperature was only about 40F, but the strong wind coming through this narrow channel of the river caused quite the wind chill.
I drove full-throttle up some long, local hills and was very glad that the engine ran strong, with no hesitation at all anymore. Also did a minor adjustment on my Gene Berg shifter to get into 1st gear easily. |
