It’s time to start preparing for the 2020 Type 3 Rally! This will be the fourth California Central Coast Type 3-only driving event, and once again we’re planning to base operations around the historic Borradori Garage overlooking the ocean in Cayucos, one of the last unspoiled beach towns in California. Enjoy an epic weekend with Type 3 enthusiasts from all over California and beyond!
The itinerary is still taking shape, but this time we’re planning four days of Type 3 events.
On Thursday, October 1 we’ll meet in downtown Guadalupe, CA at an old school Mexican restaurant called La Simpatia for refreshments, and then head over to nearby Pismo Beach where we’ll hit the sand. The tide will be on its way out so we’ll have more time on the beach than we did in 2017. On Friday the 2nd we’ll head inland on scenic backcountry roads and possibly pay a visit to the Pozo Saloon, which has been in continuous operation since 1858. Saturday morning we’ll be heading up the coast on Highway 1 for a scenic drive along the seaside cliffs to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in Big Sur in honor of our brother David Orozco. And on Sunday we’ll be back at the Borradori for a farewell breakfast. Plans might change a bit over the next year, but you can count on interesting drives on twisty coastal and inland roads with 30 or 40 other Type 3s.
As with the last three Central Coast rallies, all Type 3s are welcome to attend — ’61–’73, stock or custom, restored cars or daily drivers. We’d love to see everything from Notchbacks, Squarebacks, Fastbacks and Type 34s to Brazilian Type 3s and Type 3-based buggies, specials and ratrods — anything Type 3 is welcome! There’s no cost to participate in the event other than gas, food and accommodations.
Anyone who’s been to a Type 3 Rally before can tell you there’s nothing else like it. If you haven’t joined us in the past, this is your chance to see what the buzz is all about. We hope to see you there!!

Looks like a nice time...we have reservations in Mesa Verde darnit. Would consider attending as it is cooler coming across the desert that time of year from Arizona. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

With one year to go I ran a test drive to see what the traffic would be like on the first weekend of October. I also wanted to check out the place where we would be picnicking in Big Sur - the day use area at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Well, everything was just about perfect, including the weather .
Now, on to figuring out Friday's cruise...

OK, that scene really is motivating me to get my oil cooler installed and proofed out!
This event is the best, great Type 3 folks and cars, beautiful scenery, always good planning... |

Just waiting for ISP to get the front beam rubber collar kit back in stock, then put the car back together. Don't want to put in the 55 year old ones back in the car.
TBH, I started with replacing the rear brakes a couple of months before the last type 3 rally so I'd have brakes for that event, and well one thing led to another. Still working on the car.
I'm determined to make the next one. Just need parts and time. |

There are several motels in town, and a bunch in nearby Morro Bay, too. Usually we designate a group hotel in town but some camp nearby, too.
There is a usual group or two coming north. One common meet-up point early morning is in Ventura at Arby's on Main St. just off the 101. I'm sure there will be more organized when we get close. |
