Ok i lied i actually owned a rotted to the ground bus befor but i just bought it for parts. But this is my first bus im going to fix up. Im a bug guy and have owned a few ovals. Im currently restoring a 54 3 fold frame off. Ive had many nice ovals and always afraid to drive them because how clean they are. So i wanted something ruff and this fit the bill. Its a orig paint 66 13w non walk through. My plans are simple with this. Fix the rust, lower it, and drive the hell out of it. Im learning a lot from these forums so i think im going with a 68 bug trans, flipped spindles and 4 inch beam. Here are some pics of my beauty. Took 3 days to get the shag carpet off everything. And then i played with the forward cargo door. If you look in the first pics you can see a bondo spot and surface rust under the glass. Well i mixed some color and blended it pretty good. I will do the rear quarters next. And i also have to fix the window frames as someone cut the corners to fit those jelousy windows

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |

For nearly twenty years, from 1970 to the late 1980's, the liberal application of shag carpeting was the normal thing to do to the interior of a VW bus.
My older brother had a '67 panel bus which he bought with 4 inches of foam on the floor, and the entire floor and walls covered in yellow/orange/brown shag carpeting.
We would go skiing in Vermont, my brothers up front, and me lying on the shag in the rear with the ski gear. They would be freezing, so they would crank up the Southwind heater, which only vented into the rear, and I'd be roasting! It was more like a kidnapping, as I couldn't see out the front windows, just random headlights and streetlights flickering into the shadowy confines of the cargo compartment.

Removing that carpet must have been a nasty job. Good luck....keep the progress pics coming. Believe it or not, that paint will buff out nicely. Try a small spot to see. My Sea Blue came back nicely. |
