I need a new condenser for a 0231168005 * 021905205P. Everywhere I've found states that the condenser 02074 can be used. I ordered two from Bus Depot and the wire from the condenser to the internal spade end is too short by 3/4"-1".
I could probably slot the screw hole on the condenser bracket to allow some additional space to slide it over, but surprised that there is that much difference from the original condenser wire.
Any suggestions? _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog

Is your distributor "clocked" in your engine the correct way? I've sold a lot of restored 205Ps with the 02074 condenser mounted. They are made in Turkey by Bosch. Where was your's manufactured?
I also have a TON of good used 02074 condensers that are original German. You pay postage, the condenser is yours. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I have ended up running the condensers at an angle to get the wire to reach and have thought about installing a threaded insert a bit off to the side so that the whole condenser can be moved. Sadly Bosch doesn't seem to care much about the quality of thr parts they sell for these old rigs anymore.
Pretty much if I have an old condenser that works, it just gets to keep on working verses taking the risk in having an engine die on the road because of a shiny new but junky part. |

No, distributor is out. I'll take some exact measurements and pics and post the difference. Both the new ones are Bosch manu'd in Turkey. I bought them probably 3 or 4 years ago. Just now getting back to working on her and back running. General Life, Kids growing up, etc. Will post shortly.
Just wasn't sure if there was a another model condenser that maybe I missed for this distributor since I last worked on her.
I mean, since I've been gone, tons of posts on the Beru coils that I never knew about as a replacement for the bad blue coils, so lots to catch up on. _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog

The red is my old one. The green is the new Bosch 02074.

There's a condenser bracket that holds the rubber grommet. You can simply mount the main condenser body right there. Do you have that clip? The only possible issue is if you can't mount the condenser in that spot due to hitting something.

Yes, I have the grommet bracket, but it's just not in the picture There's no way I can use the grommet bracket without stretching the wire more.
I could solder in an extra piece of wire, but then I'm afraid of heating up the condenser too much.
After reading post again a short time later...
Ah, I understand. I will try that. Not sure if enough threads on the screw, but will try. _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog

That is where I mount my condensers after restorations. The screw is a common metric thread. Ace Hardware or any hardware will have screws if you need them longer. It may not be a cheese head screw but it will work. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Ding, Ding, Ding. We have a winner. Crisis averted.
And BTW, THANKS for posting that VW Porn of a distributor. Yes, I'm drooling over it and one day, I'm going to order one. _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog

Actually, that didnt work for me, because then it hits on the engine tin and it blocks the distributor from going in. Here's the new location:

That is where I have mine mounted, but the wires were so short I still had to mount it at an angle.
Lot of hassle to offset a $15/10,000 units saving on the part of Bosch. |

Guys. Not only did we make a touchdown, we freakin' won the game!
After a total of four years of not having her running, cranked her today and she purred as she always has. Long story short 4 or 5 years ago, I was adjusting my points and dropped the points screw down into the engine tin. Had to take the engine tins off to get the screw and thought I might as well paint everything,
Well, I painted everything, cleaned up the engine compartment, finally installed my new compartment panels I had made several years earlier, etc. Still need to tweak the timing, dwell, etc and I found a small gas leak from base of carb but that's all little stuff. I'm just ecstatic that after this much time, she's running as well as she did. Thanks for listening!

I have a NOS 205P, complete with original cap, rotor, points, and condensor.
Would anyone be interested in those part numbers? _________________ John

if you only knew what he paid for that. VW dumped a bunch of them a couple years ago and I think John is one of the few people who was smart enough to jump on the deal when he saw it. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Indeed. It's not for sale. I was just offering to submit original part numbers for reference.
And, yes, thanks, Steve, for alerting me to the sale of these distributors in Germany. I purchased 2, and have one running on the '78 Doka. The other is my spare. _________________ John

I had that issue too a while ago: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8750775
The follow up to that post is that I did readjust the drive shaft to the correct position, and I moved the capacitor on the distributor. I'd need to look at the bus to see how, but I'm fairly certain that I went for position #3 on my post in the end, the same as in your picture.
Congrats in getting the bus running again. _________________ '79 Westy, P22 interior, FI 2.0 l Federal, GE engine (hydraulic lifters)
