Yes I remember that engine
Is a N model single Draft for 1964
I was going to buy it but shipping was 10k Shocked

Probably Egypt? There's a lot of cool VW stuff still in Egypt.

Can they take it inside a pyramid there?
It can be transported to the pyramid in Las Vegas really fast if they can do that under a full moon.
"Pyramid power" Very Happy

Clips for the fan belt cover instead of screws, wouldn’t that be a 65 or later?

See, and I *think* that *may* have been the reason for the difference in color- short coil wire v. long coil wire.

Out of curiosity, who is the fella leaning over the engine in this pic, and where was this taken? The older guy is the twin of Wolfgang, who was my lead tech in my old Sun Valley, Id. shop- if it isn't actually him! Shocked

MMmm Id say 10 years ago - ish. Back when Russel owned this notch, Eric Hand does now.

That old duffer is a guy Russ liked to go to. Defiantly someone who knew old VW's. And I want to say you asked before when I posted it 10 years ago. Wink Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing

I would agree! I was in Cairo for two weeks back in 2007. We were heading to factory down near Giza on Friday night. The bridges over the Nile are lined with vendors and cars out cruising. I saw many beetles...I even saw a tricked out lowered 412 with neon under the side boards....and a couple of what looked like Brazilia's.

Earlier it was mentioned that the coloring may be a vendor preference for wire colors. Beru definitely has blue spark plug wires available and in their long-time range of products.

When looking through this again, I noticed in Allwagons post, pink top BERU spark plugs. Shocked Cool I bet the blue wires are BERU for sure. I have some NOS OG BERU plugs for my 1500 S. Maybe Ill drop the blue wires in and have the cap end use the crack pipes I have as well. Wink

Also found some more related photos with blue wires.

My '65 was built in September 1964. It came with clips for the belt cover, but it had the 1-piece muffler. The 3-piece muffler was introduced in October 1964 along with the other changes to the heating system (fresh air mixer thermostats etc.). Missed it by a month!

This photo looks like static timing and there is a real nice unit that clips on the timing peg so you don't look at the timing marks on an angle.

I only have on question . Why did Bosch plug wires end up with a carbon fiber coil wire , they never used to be and I feel you would get a better spark without the extra high resistance and using a solid copper coil wire. There is already 5K in the rotor and 1K at each plug end. All that comes to mind is a solid core coil wire would /might affect the radio. I wouldn't use resister plugs. The coil wire is not that long yet the set I got in the 90's the coil wire resistance increased quite a bit. I try to find out doing a search and all I end up with are places selling wire sets.

Why they did it? Not sure. But you can get solid core spark plug wires still.
