I have a 2000 GTI VR6. My check engine light came on and code P0442 small evap leak came up. I pulled the purge valve off near Power steering fluid reservoir and as per my mechanic’s advice that with the engine off, I should not be able to blow through it. I could not blow through, so I know my purge valve is closed and works. I smoked it at that point and couldn’t see any leaks.

Next, with the rear right fender wheelwell off with access to the charcoal canister, I smoked it at the fuel tank. With it completely sealed at the fuel cap opening, no smoke was escaping. I tightened the gas cap and light was still on after days of driving.

Next I replaced the gas tank cap. If the cap is the problem, How long should I have to drive for the light to go off?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I had the same problem with a Honda so take into advisement, but your car has to go through three testing cycles without the code being present to turn the light off.

This took about a week of around town driving, to and from work about 15 miles each way.

The light will not go off on it's own, it has to be reset.

Had this with my Cabrio. The seal at the fuel pump was leaking.
