It could also be image distortion. Many of these images are not flat scanned.

This comment is a reminder of how tough things were in Germany after the war. My Mom said her mother use to tell her all the time when she was a kid to "finish the food on your plate. There are starving kids in Europe that would love to have that food!"
How soon we forget.

Yes. Through the first half of the 1950s most factory workers rode bicycles, and there were shoemakers at the factory to repair the workers' shoes.
