My factory Westy air dam is 14" (!) above the road.
The VW archives showing aero shows -way too much air- under the Vanagon.
Apparently, the factory air dam is mostly cosmetic.

I'm wanting a front air dam that lowers to 5" above road and
retracts to provide 14" -or better- front clearance.

Freeway= lower position, best MPG, improved handling.
Camping = upper positon, best clearance.

Syncro Jael just did a study on this. He crafted a large front air dam for highway use and removes it for off roading.

How's the progress on your air-dam? Any more photos on the install and raising mechanism?

I think 1 1/2" lift springs did more to reduce mileage on my van than any of the other mods, including a high-top so this air-dam intrigues me.
