So I’m gonna be pulling my trans axle in a few days to swap it out for another one. My second gear keeps popping out of gear. Can’t think it to be anything else but the trans.
I guess I need to support the engine when I pull the trans. Anyone have a picture of this ? Trying to figure out how to do it.

2x4 or pipe over the top of the engine compartment, with a chain or rope to the engine.
The engine only wants to tilt a little bit bit without the transmission, so it doesn't really need much support. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

I use the cheap 1 inch ratchet straps you get at Home Depot or harbor freight. _________________ ☮️ |

So two by 4 with ratchet strap on the back half of the motor is good enough ??

I'd give the 2x4 little end pieces so it makes an "I" and can sit upright without falling over. If it's laid flat, it will bend.
That said, these motors are so light 2 people can pick one up, probably doesn't matter. Wouldn't be surprised to see someone bearhug one by themselves. _________________ '87 Syncro

Hi, David, welcome. Search is your friend here. Once you get used to it, it's very fast and easy.
I use it all the time because it's rare that any info that I'm looking for hasn't already been covered here... in detail.
Here's what you do...
To do a quick and easy search (see the 1st pic below) , 1. Near the top of the main Vanagon forum page (not your thread subpage), find the search function,
2. Type in "engine support",
3. Select "Title only" to limit the number of responses,
4. Then hit the [search] button to get this: Click to see search results. If you want to do a more advanced search, then (see the 2nd & 3rd pics below)1. Goto TheSamba's advanced search page by putting your mouse over the "Forums" pull-down menu at the top of the page and selecting "Search", (see 2nd pic below)
2. Enter your search information, (see 3rd pic below)
3. Click the "search" button circled in green to get the same result: Click to see search results.
Either search reveals many existing threads on this topic, such as this one: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=607910
Hope this helps...

get a 4x4 post from the hardware store and use a ratchet strap or a worm gear winch. the winch makes adjusting the height super easy when putting things back together.

There are two loops coming off the case specifically for hanging the motor. One fore, one aft (FIF). You really can't miss them once you look for them.
I've used a similar method to dabaron's to change my oil pump without totally removing the motor. worked great. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage

if you are supporting the engine... there is a tab with a hole in it at the flywheel end, right that the top of the case. i used the hook on the ratchet strap and it worked just fine.
the support holes are visible in this photo

Aloha yeah harbor freight is no go I live on Maui and the freight to get that here is more than the cost of the item. Like everything here it’s hard to ship stuff here. |

Aloha
I got the trans loose and disconnected I have to figure something out to put on the ground for the trans to land on when I pull it out. Was thinking a pallet with some padding to catch it in case it falls off the jack.
I’m going to Kauai for a few days to surf. Will deal with it when I get back.

That's what did. I used a cargo strap attached to the fwd hole near the flywheel and wrapped it around the bumper.
U could also do the same with a 2x4 I guess. I needed to close the engine lid tho - we got raccoons here.

This is my sophisticated engine lift apparatus cobbled together from a display case I got for free at the local Habitat for Humanity thrift store.
Those curved tubes at the base were later sacrificed and became the intake manifold runners. _________________ Casey--

It's held there by clean living and a healthy relationship with my personal savior, Mr. Rogers. Any time I crawled under there, I had a hyd. jack supporting the crossbar while I welded. I don't think it ever shifted on its own, and was a bear to get to do so when I was making adjustments. _________________ Casey--

There’s a photo on here somewhere of somebody laying a bike repair stand across the engine bay as a strap anchor to actually remove the engine it’s one of my favorites
The op is talking about dropping the trans only, so all a strap would be providing is balance. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage
