My oil fill cap was MIA when I got home, so I figured I'd lost it on the road. Luckily it was hiding in the tins down by the pulley. Got it cleaned up and put back on - nice easy fix for a change.
The oil breather tube didn't have anything on it (since there wasnt a oil bath air filter on my engine), and I didnt want it just free ported to the engine bay, so I picked up a little mini filter for it. I guess it'll work until I have a better plan.

Onto final prep for the long trip....

I got the Bug titled and found out I can keep the collectors plates, so no buying tags ever again! Also got my insurance swapped over, so shes legal now.

I picked up a spare tire, but it's going to have to ride in the jeep with the tow bar for the journey since the spare tire area is too crunched in for it to fit. Oh well.

I inspected the front end (everything seemed tight),greased up the front beam, torqued the lug studs, filled the tires, topped the brake fluid, cleaned the battery terminals, checked belt tightness, cleaned the windshield and rear window(and razerbladed the overspray off it), put some rain-x on the front windshield, did a temp repair to the glove box so it would stay closed, and removed the Air Force sticker on the rear glass in favor of a Storm Trooper.

Phew! That was a lot of things in to get done in a week since I bought her. I got a 23 mile test drive bringing her home from purchase and only another 18 miles after all the repairs. There wasnt much left to do to prepare but to pray it would make the 200 mile round trip.

This is something I was hoping to get fixed before my trip but there wasnt any time, and I didnt find any repair panels for it. I'll get to it some time. It's ok for now, I dont think the battery is gonna fall out.....yet.

If you're towing the car. Remove the battery. That pan section looks ready to let go.
Get one of these and modify it to fit your car.

Good Luck on your trip!

Thanks for the warning. I think the battery will be ok, as its actually bolted to a plastic tray that is bolted to the good metal inside the cab.
It should work until I can get the time to weld in the new rear pan section.

Mentioning being into wiring... you might dig this as much as I do - Try dipping a connector in metal prep containing phosphoric acid for a few minutes, rinse it clean by dipping it in water and then dry it off with a hair dryer. Or mist it in place with a squeeze trigger water bottle, let it sit for a few minutes and rinse it the same way. Just make sure its totally dry before adding electricity. ALL the green discoloration disappears, even in between the crimp and the wire strands. It is really satisfying. Of course a light film of dialectic grease for posterity.

Enjoy the time with your bug on the trip. Smile

After barely any driving of this thing I was hitting the road, fingers crossed, with my safety crew following me.

Whew, made it through Portland Oregon rush hour traffic!!

Well I finally made it to the show grounds just as it was getting dark and she was running pretty damn hot, but i was there. I hunted down the club from my local area and pleaded for their gurus to help.

Those guys were dam great people and everyone rallied around my engine and tweaked the carbs and adjusted my timing. What a bunch of life savers!!! We hung out and got to know everyone and talked cars, of course. Later we headed to a local motel so that we could be back early a.m. for the swap meet - my bug needed lots of misc parts.

Here is some of their rides

We were back early in the morning, so early that we had to wait for most of the venders to put stuff out. I did score some good deals on a few little things, and found some V.W. Thing matchbox cars for my kid.

Not even set up yet, lol. It was time for coffee while we waited on venders.

We had a great time seeing all the awesome cars, checking out customs, getting tours in people's busses, and digging for parts in the swap meet. But it was the culture/people that I fell in love with.

After all the fun I wasnt ready to go home, and the weather seemed to be as sad as i was on the drive home.
