I just wanted to give anyone ordering a tank from WW to crack it opened as soon as you get it. Mine was shipped with standing water inside. This of course, caused some rust to occur inside the tank. I was able to clean it out, but it was a pain and not expected since it's supposed to be a new tank. There was also rust in the threads for the fuel sender. Needless to say I was disappointed in this. I didnt want to send a fuel tank back as it is inconvenient and expensive. So I cleaned it out. I addressed it with WW and they stated they would look into the issue for future thanks. Offered to send me a new tank, but as stated, I'd rather clean out the one I have already.
Shop towels soaked up with most of the water. I used a heat gun to dry up the rest.
Mostly cleaned up..
It was pretty much surface rust and hopefully there isnt any more. _________________ The United States Constitution

Should treat that with Phosphoric Acid, to keep that from rusting more. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I think it was just some surface rust, I cleaned it out with some chemicals. I dont think an acid treatment was going to be necessary. _________________ The United States Constitution

You need to get the rust out of the pores of the steel. Plus that acid leaves a coating that resists more rust. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I would have to ship this tank back, and for me, that's highly inconvenient. I would likely have to pay shipping back and I just simply dont want to deal with it. So I figured I'd just clean the tank out and send it. Just a bummer to pay for a new tank and receive it like this. Just a warning to anyone who gets one or has one that hasnt opened it up or doesn't check inside. Some people stick pile parts for a while before they put them in. WW had a short return policy so I'd advise anyone who has one that they may not have installed to check inside asap. _________________ The United States Constitution

That's BS!
WW should pay to send the tank back to them - no questions asked. _________________ Joey

Or send out a new one and let him keep that one. That would’ve been cool of them to send one, even though you turned one down, of if they’d given you store credit of an equal amount. The latter would’ve at least kept the money in store. _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

I was definitely disappointed with my options since I've spent countless thousands of dollars with them. Like I said, it's really inconvenient to ship a fuel tank back. It's one thing when it small parts, but a big ass tank, I'm going to have to go to fed ex or ups and deal with all that crap. Either way, its cleaned out and installed now, I shouldent have had to do anything to it since it's a new tank and generally WW has high quality parts. I'll continue to order from them, but I wanted to warn anyone who might have a tank they havent opened up and inspected yet. Or anyone who is ordering one. _________________ The United States Constitution

I just got one of those recently and it was fine. I did rinse it out first. You could have sent it back in the new tank box, but you will pay a oversize charge on the box. They get a discount on shipping. It is a very nice tank, one of the best fitting aftermarket things I have bought |

I would've taken the new one. Totally unacceptable in my opinion. They should've sent a new one and let you keep that one or send you a shipping label and have FedEx pick it up from your house. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

I totally agree. It's their problem. Return shipping should not be on you. You didn't put the water in it and let it sit in a store room for years. It is totally on them to send a replacement and if they want that one returned, to pay for return shipping. Or offer a partial refund to you for correcting their problem. They need to check into the cause for sure. Did the box look to have been wet at some point? Wonder if it happened in China or in their storage after it got in the states. |

I'm pretty sure these are factory restored tanks. It was sealed before powderocating it appears. The cap for the drain and the cap for the fuel sender were powder coated over, so I assume it was coated and then that was it. The box wasnt wet at all.
The above solutions would have been acceptable, they stated however, that their policy is exchange only. I didnt get into the details of shipping, but I also was not prompted to think they would make that easy on me. I figured it would be standard ship back on my dime and sent a new tank. Either way, if they sent a new tank with a packing slip I may have wanted to go that route. It didnt seem like that was the case however. _________________ The United States Constitution

Its possible, although, I live in Reno and they are in CA so the weather was mostly the same. Also over ordered a lot of stuff over the years on trucks and what not.. I've never seen condensation to this magnitude. _________________ The United States Constitution

You say you "figured," and, it "didn't seem..." It sounds like you didn't ask.
Any time I've had to return (exchange) less-than-acceptable items to WW (three times, if I recall), they sent pre-paid return-shipping labels with the replacement parts. And unlike those scumbags at CIP1, NO, I didn't have to pay for the replacement and then wait for a credit once THEY review the returned item(s) and deem whether it was defective...but I digress.
You can take this to the bank. |

I shudder to think that WW gets parts from China! Every part I ever got from them was of a good quality. And seeing that they reproduce a number of VW parts only gives them a better reputation. Hope this is only a rare instance by chance! |

I've bought several parts from WW that were unusable junk. For example, I bought some decklid hinges from Wolfsburg West; the tolerances are so sloppy, and the pins are so loose, that I'm better off using worn-out originals (I ended up getting rebuilt ones from Greg, which is what I shoulda done in the first place)

Well as I stated, I immediately started cleaning the tank as I do not like shipping oversized items and dealing with the process nor do I have the time. I'm not bashing WW. I will continue to be a customer of theirs, I just want to warn anyone who orderes a tank from them or has a tank to check for water inside the tank asap! Water in your fuel system wont be a good thing and rust surely isnt a great start to a new build. _________________ The United States Constitution
